The curriculum aims to facilitate and prepare students towards engagement in the quest of knowledge and be willing to carry out research in one’s field for future scientific advancement. Nineteen weeks are allocated for the Surgery program. Eleven weeks in Phase II (Year Three) and 8 weeks in Phase III (Year 5).

Phase II (Year Three) is the first exposure in Surgery. In Year Three the emphasis will be more on acquiring clinical skills in history taking, physical examination and formulation of diagnosis. Understanding on pathophysiology of surgical diseases is again emphasized in this phase.

Postgraduate Activities

Postgraduate Programme

The postgraduate training programme in surgery is designed for the trainees to acquire knowledge, skills and competency in clinical surgery. Clinical Services

General Surgery

We offer surgical treatment for a wide array of conditions caused by congenital (in-born condition), trauma, tumour and many others. We have dedicated stoma nurses to help patients with stoma to cope with their new condition prior to discharge. Through collaboration with the oncology (cancer treatment) team, we offer a comprehensive approach for patients affected with cancer such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormonal and targeted therapy on top of the surgical procedures. Nutritional support team is available to assist in optimization of the nutritional need of our patients.

Surgical Outpatient Clinics

Outpatient care service is divided according to subspecialty. We have three different outpatient clinics in Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM(SASMEC@IIUM): Surgical Outpatient Clinic, Neuroscience (Nuerosurgery)Clinic, Urology and Nephrology Clinic

Operation Theatres

Located at level 3 of SASMEC@IIUM (next to the ICU), we have optimal number of operating rooms for different needs, both for elective (planned) and emergency cases. Surgeon, anaesthetist and nursing staff work on shifts and on-call basis over 24 hours, catering for any incoming cases around the clock. We offer a wide range of open and minimally invasive surgeries for paediatric and adult patients, equipped with built in imaging facilities e.g. CT scan, ultrasound and fluoroscopy. Availability of microscopes and micro-instruments for microsurgeries e.g. vascular, neurosurgical and plastic and reconstructive cases. Hybrid Operation Theatre equipped with high-quality fluoroscopy facility with flat-panel imaging in a lead-lined room. Integration of other modalities, such as a biplane system, built in C-arm CT and integrated ultrasound to assist surgeons in specialized neurosurgical, interventional radiology and cardiac procedures.
Endo-Vascular Suite provides optimal environment to accommodate the equipment required by vascular surgeon and interventional cardiologist, as well as the anaesthesia team, nursing staff, perfusionist, and radiology technicians. Careful equipment positioning is to allow fast conversion to conventional surgery if needed.

Surgical Daycare Unit

Daycare surgeries are for patients who require a surgical procedure without an overnight admission to the hospital. The Surgical Day Care is the area where those patients will register and be prepared for surgery, either under local anaesthetic or general anaesthesia. Patients are taken to the operating theatre, monitored post-operatively and discharge from the unit following surgery.

Endoscopy Suite, Gastrointestinal Lab & Urology Lab

Located at level 2, endoscopy suite is a dedicated area where surgical procedures are performed with endoscopes. It offers comprehensive endoscopy procedures for both inpatients and outpatients. The endoscopic procedures available include esophagogastroduodenoscopy (OGDS), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). Gastrointestinal lab offers specialized gastrointestinal procedures including endoanal ultrasonography, pH study, esophageal and anal manometry and biofeedback therapy. Urology lab offers specialized urological procedures such as cystoscopy, ureteric stenting and transrectal biopsy for prostate. Staff works during normal working hours with dedicated on-call staff for emergency cases around the clock. Patients are seen by referral or booking from the respective surgeon in charge. They will then be provided with specific instructions regarding eating, drinking and taking certain medications prior to the procedure.
