OVERVIEW

Otorhinolaryngology is a medical speciality related to the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of conditions of the Ear, Nose, Throat and Head & Neck region including conditions affecting hearing and balance and other sensory conditions such as smell and taste disorders. ENT offers the full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient services using the latest equipment and techniques, including up to date expertise in the field. With the advent of endoscopes and microscopes, more in-depth evaluation of ENT diseases can be easily performed in the clinic by the ENT surgeons. Many of the ENT diseases are treated with medications without surgery. For those needing surgical procedures, some of the simple procedures can be performed in the clinic setting. As for the rest, more extensive surgery, are done under general anaesthesia in the operating theatres.

The department also provide an accurate audiology test which caters those patients ranging from new born to elderly using latest audiologic equipment and trained audiologist. We also provide hearing aid services for those who are unfortunately diagnosed with hearing loss.

OUR PROGRAMMES

UNDERGRADUATE

The MED 4402 includes a series of lectures and seminars on common ear, nose and throat conditions and a two week clinical attachment at the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat at IIUMMC. The emphasis is on the common problems seen among patients in the ORL Ambulatory Care Centre. For each week students are assigned to the out patient clinics for 3 days and the operating theatre for 2 days. All students are encouraged to assist during the surgical procedure.

POSTGRADUATE

The Master of Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology – Head & Neck) programme is designed to allow progressive mastery of knowledge, skills, attitude and to stimulate trainees to develop further interest in Otorhinolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery (ORL-HNS) subspecialties. The duration of the training programme is four (4) years, with total years not exceeding seven (7) years. Upon completion of each of the components stipulated in the programme, the candidates will be eligible to enlist for the final Master of Surgery (ORL-HNS) examination, which is jointly organized by the department with the National Conjoint Board (ORL-HNS).

Candidates will be exposed to different scenarios and clinical practices as they carry out their duties and responsibilities under supervision by the various consultants. Candidates are also required to maintain log books and submit case reports. They should also conduct research and produce a dissertation prior to the final examination.

HEAD AND NECK DISSECTION WORKSHOP

Head and Neck Dissection Workshop is an educational event or training program designed to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the anatomy, surgical techniques, and procedures involved in the dissection and examination of the head and neck region. This workshop is typically aimed at medical students, residents, fellows, and healthcare professionals, such as surgeons, otolaryngologists (ENT specialists), and anatomists.

TEMPORAL BONE DISSECTION WORKSHOP

Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop is a specialized educational program designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, surgical techniques, and procedures related to the dissection of the temporal bone. The temporal bone is a complex structure in the skull that houses the organs of hearing and balance, and its dissection is particularly relevant for otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat specialists), neurotologists, and other medical professionals involved in ear surgery and related procedures.

ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY WORKSHOP

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Workshop is a specialized training program designed to educate medical professionals, particularly otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat specialists) and rhinologists, on the principles, techniques, and skills required for endoscopic sinus surgery. This type of workshop provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the anatomy, procedures, and technologies involved in the treatment of sinus and nasal disorders using minimally invasive endoscopic techniques.

Audiology Outreach Programme

An audiology outreach program is a community-based initiative that focuses on providing audiology services and support to individuals who may have hearing-related concerns, especially those who may not have easy access to traditional audiological care. These programs are often aimed at improving the hearing health and overall well-being of individuals through a range of services and activities.
