About Department<\/h2>\n

Established concurrently with the Kulliyyah of Medicine in 1997, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care initially operated from the Jalan Hospital Campus. In its early years, the department focused primarily on teaching anaesthesiology and intensive care to Year 4 undergraduate students. Additionally, the academic staff played a significant role in delivering anaesthesia and intensive care services at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan until 2016.<\/p>\n

The department achieved a significant milestone in 2014 with the launch of the Master of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) programme, welcoming its first cohort of two trainees from IIUM. Since then, the program has expanded to include a diverse group of students, mainly from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre, and other universities. The programme celebrated its first graduate in May 2019 and has successfully produced 62 anaesthetists to date.<\/p>\n

In 2015, the department transitioned to the Kulliyyah of Medicine building located at the Indera Mahkota Campus. This move provided enhanced teaching and learning facilities and proximity to student residences (mahallahs) and the teaching hospital.<\/p>\n

In January 2016, the department took a pioneering step by offering its services at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC @IIUM), formerly known as IIUM Medical Centre. Today, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care in SASMEC boasts a dedicated team of staff providing exemplary anaesthesia and intensive care services, reinforcing its commitment to excellence in both education and healthcare provision.<\/p>\n

Undergraduate Programme<\/h2>\n

Since welcoming its inaugural class of medical students in 1997, the Department has been an integral part of the Undergraduate Programme, contributing to the foundational education of medical students. Initially, the faculty focused on teaching basic physiology to Year 1 and 2 students, laying the groundwork for their medical education.<\/p>\n

The department is responsible for the MBBS 4703 course (Anaesthesiology and Critical Care), a specialized posting for Year 4 students. This course mandates students to complete a 2-week clinical rotation in anaesthesia and intensive care, offering them hands-on experience and insight into these critical areas of medicine. To date, approximately 27 cohorts of students have benefited from this rigorous training, equipping them with essential skills and knowledge in anaesthesiology and critical care.<\/p>\n

The Department launched its postgraduate program in 2014, with the first batch comprising two of our own trainee lecturers. Following this, we began admitting students sponsored under the Hadiah Latihan Persekutuan by the Ministry of Health Malaysia. This four-year program is structured into three distinct phases, designed to provide comprehensive clinical specialist training. Students are required to complete two major examinations\u2014Part 1 and the Final Examination\u2014in addition to fulfilling various work-based assessment criteria throughout their training.<\/p>\n
