The Department of Ophthalmology, IIUM is located at 4th level of the Kulliyyah of Medicine at the Indera Mahkota Campus (IMC), Kuantan, Pahang. The objectives of its development are: Firstly, to cater the need for under graduate teaching programmes. Secondly, to become the centre of excellence in ophthalmic training, research and service and third to improve the standard of eye healthcare, especially in the region in the East Coast of Malaysia.<\/p>

The department was established in 2002 and now is well equipped with a well-rounded, multi-disciplined staff with high energy, integrity and up-to-date equipment to become a world-class training, research and service centre.<\/p>

The Department of Ophthalmology was the first to offer the Specialized Clinic in IMC, and the first to perform surgical operations in IMC. Undergraduate Programme<\/h2>

The Department involved in Undergraduate Programme since the first intake of medical students in 1997. The department offers the MBBS 4603 course (Ophthalmology) for the Year 4 students as part of the specialised posting. In this course, students are required to undergo 2 weeks of clinical rotation in Ophthalmology. Postgraduate Programme<\/b><\/h2>

The postgraduate training programme in ophthalmology is designed for the trainees to acquire knowledge, skills and competency in ophthalmic surgery. The duration of the training programme will be four years and can be up to a maximum of seven years. Upon satisfactory completion of each of the components stipulated in the programme, the trainees will be eligible to appear for the final examination.<\/p>

The programme is problem-centered and experience-based. Trainees carry out their duties and responsibilities under supervision. As the training progresses, the trainees will be given the task of incremental responsibility for patient care with a corresponding reduction in the level of supervision. Trainees are required to maintain log books and submit case reports. They should also conduct research and produce a dissertation prior to the final examination.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThe Implantable Phakic Contact Lens (IPCL) is a special contact lens, which is implanted between the iris (coloured part of the eye) and the natural lens of the eye.

The main function of the IPCL is to provide high quality vision without depending on glasses or traditional contact lens.

IPCL is for everyone, aiding those with short\/ long sightedness, astigmatism and even prebyopia. \n\t\t\t\t\t\tCorneal cross-linking is a treatment for an eye problem called Keratoconus.

\nIn this condition, the front part of your eye, called the cornea, thins out and get weaker over time. This makes it bulge into a cone shape which can distort your vision and make it hard to see.

\nCorneal cross-linking is the only treatment that can stop progressive keratoconus from getting worse.
