Cybersecurity Governance, Risk and Compliance Research Unit (CGRC-RU)

Founded in 2017 under the CyberSecurity Centre of Excellence,
CGRC-RU brings together experts from IT and law to tackle today’s cybersecurity challenges. With 14 members from Kulliyyah of Information and Communication Technology (KICT) and Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), we focus on advancing knowledge and solutions in information assurance and digital security.

Our Objectives

  • To ethically evaluate, develop and promote cybersecurity standards, laws and best practices aimed at mitigating prevalent and emerging cyber threats (including those enabled or generated by AI), contributing to a secure and trustworthy digital ecosystem.
  • To design, implement, and assess comprehensive and systematic cybersecurity risk management frameworks and processes to enhance the resilience of organizations and society against cyber risks.
  • To advance the holistic understanding and responsible adoption of cybersecurity governance, risk, and compliance principles by fostering multidisciplinary research collaborations, disseminating research findings, and engaging in knowledge exchange with industry stakeholders.

AI-Driven Cyberattack and AI-Enhanced Cyberdefence – February Meetup
Held on 27 February 2025 at IIUM, this rawSEC x IIUM event brought together cybersecurity experts to explore the dual role of AI in modern cyberattacks and defences. Speakers from Kaspersky and IIUM shared insights on AI’s impact, challenges, and opportunities in the evolving threat landscape.

Strategic Thinking for Cyber Resilience: Empowering IIUM Leaders
Held on 26 February 2025 at IIUM Gombak, this full-day workshop aimed to enhance cyber resilience among IIUM leaders through strategic thinking, leadership insights, and cybersecurity awareness. The session featured speakers from various IIUM departments and offered CTD points and certificates of attendance to participants.

Australia Awards Fellowship Program (19-30 May 2025)
Assoc. Prof. Dr Nurul Nuha Abdul Molok was invited to be one of the instructors for the 'Strategic Thinking for Cyber Resilience' program at Melbourne Connect, Australia. The University of Melbourne's Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT) hosted senior public servants from various Malaysian government agencies like PDRM, NACSA, AGC, and CGSO for this intensive two-week program. Funded by the Australian government, it is a testament to the strong collaboration between Malaysia and Australia in tackling cyber challenges, integrating expertise from both Australia and Malaysia in this capacity building initiative.

The National Cyber Security Agency (NACSA), National Security Council, has offered the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), through IIUM Entrepreneurship & Consultancies Sdn. Bhd. (IECSB), a consultancy project entitled “Kajian Rang Undang-Undang Keselamatan Siber”.

Research Training Programme at The University of Melbourne
A delegation of five researchers (see names below) from the Department of Information Systems, Kulliyyah of ICT, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) had the distinct honor of participating in a research training program at the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Melbourne, Australia. This program forms an integral part of the UoM-IIUM Cyber Resilience research project, generously funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia. The delegation extends its sincere gratitude to Professor Dr. Atif Ahmad and Associate Professor Dr. Sean Maynard for their invaluable knowledge sharing session, which undoubtedly contributes towards the advancement of Malaysia's cyber resilience efforts.
