GLOBAL PHARMACY & INDONESIA CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT (GPICE) 2024

The Global Pharmacy & Indonesia Cultural Engagement (GPICE) is an enriching program launched by the Department of Pharmacy of Universitas Islam Indonesia. Designed to offer fun and unique learning experiences related to pharmacy practices in Indonesia, this 14-day program is open to both domestic and international students.

Activities:

  1. Community Health Interprofessional Pharmacy Program:

– Engage in interprofessional collaborations to improve community health outcomes.

– Attachment in Primary Health Centre Pharmacy and Community Services: Gain hands-on experience in primary health centres and participate in community service projects.

  • School of Jamu:

– Learn about traditional Indonesian herbal medicine through visits to Jamu production centers and workshops.

  • Visit Yogyakarta Cultural Heritage:

– Explore the rich cultural heritage of Yogyakarta, including tours of traditional markets and Batik production centers.

Eight students from the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, IIUM Kuantan are participating in this year’s GPICE program. Their involvement underscores our commitment to providing students with global learning opportunities that enhance their educational experience and professional development.

By participating in this program, our students will not only broaden their knowledge of global pharmacy practices but also gain a deeper appreciation for Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

We are proud of our students’ enthusiasm and dedication to expanding their horizons and look forward to the positive impact this experience will have on their future careers in pharmacy.

1st Summer School of the Year: EXEGYPT Intercontinental Summer School (24th Edition), Ismailia, Egypt

EXEGYPT Intercontinental Summer School (24th Edition), Ismailia, Egypt

 

The EXEGYPT Intercontinental Summer School, in collaboration with the European Medical Students’ Association (EMSA), is hosting its 24th edition in Ismailia, Egypt. This renowned program offers a unique and enriching experience for students from various disciplines, including Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Architecture. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in meticulously designed scientific programs while exploring the rich cultural heritage of Egypt.

 

This time around, Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, IIUM Kuantan is sending undergraduate students in two rounds: Group 1 and Group 2.

 

Program Details

 

Group 1: July 15, 2024 – July 26, 2024 (Total participants: 4) 

Group 2:July 31, 2024 – August 11, 2024 (Total participants: 5)

 

Social and Cultural Exploration

 

Participants will embark on an extraordinary daily social program, traveling and discovering nine different Egyptian cities from East to West, including:

– Cairo

– Giza

– Alexandria

– Port Said

– Ismailia

– Ain Sokhna

– Fayoum

– Dahab

– Sharm El Sheikh

 

Academic Programs

 

  1. Emergency Program:

   – Lectures on the latest topics in emergency medicine

   – Hands-on clinical rounds

   – Opportunities to join surgeries and attend workshops

 

  1. Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases Program:

   – Lectures on common tropical and infectious diseases in Egypt

   – Clinical rounds and endoscopy unit visits

   – Participation in surgeries

 

  1. Dental/Maxillofacial Program:

   – Lectures and surgeries for maxillofacial fractures

   – Visits to dentistry clinics focusing on endodontics and dental extractions

 

  1. Pharmaceutical Program:

   – Lectures on clinical pharmacy topics

   – Laboratory sessions and visits to local pharmacies

 

  1. Diagnostic Radiology Program:

   – Training in radiography, ultrasonography, CT, and MRI scans

 

  1. Physiotherapy Program:

   – Lectures on applied anatomy, biomechanics, and physiology

   – Clinical rotations focusing on physiotherapy skills

 

  1. Perioperative Nursing Program:

   – Training in various roles of perioperative nursing

   – Real clinical practice experience

 

  1. Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Program:

   – Exposure to trauma patients and reconstruction protocols

   – Lectures, clinical rotations, and operations

   – Introduction to microsurgery and aesthetic surgeries

 

  1. Architectural Engineering Program:

   – Introduction to ancient Egyptian, Islamic, and Coptic architecture

   – Lectures on Arabic architecture basics

   – Hands-on projects with global colleagues

 

This program not only enhances clinical skills through extensive hands-on experience but also provides a comprehensive understanding of Egyptian culture and architecture, making it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for all participants.

 

2nd Summer School of the Year: ISCP at Universitas Pancasila

From July 21st to 27th, 2024, the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) proudly participated in the International Summer Course Program (ISCP) at Universitas Pancasila, Jakarta, Indonesia. This marks the second summer school this year for our dedicated students.

A Glimpse of the Experience

The group, consisting of 37 enthusiastic students, embarked on this academic journey with great excitement and anticipation. The attached image captures a memorable moment from their time at the university, showcasing the unity and camaraderie among the participants.

Academic and Cultural Exchange

This summer school is more than just an academic endeavor; it’s an opportunity for cultural exchange and personal growth. The program includes a mix of lectures, practical sessions, and cultural activities designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience. Our students are not only gaining knowledge in their field but also experiencing the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia.

Participating in programs like ISCP helps our students build global connections and broaden their horizons. The friendships and professional relationships formed during this week-long program are invaluable, contributing to both personal and academic growth.

KTPRIGs Field Visit to Pos Senderut, Kuala Lipis Pahang

Alhamdulillah the KTPRIGs team with SITEC Flagship members and other collaborators have visited the above-mentioned agencies to coordinate a community programme at Pos Sinderut on the 23rd -25th August 2024 under the KTPRIGs grant, led by A.P. Dr. Nomy Syafinaz. (refer Appendix 4 for photos).

SITEC Mini Exhibition in conjunction with KOP Carnival 2024

SITEC Flagship was invited by the KOPCar Committee to have a mini exhibition and briefing to the invited secondary school children. The exhibition has introduced the school children on community engagement and empowerment programs conducted by the flagship. (see Appendix 3 for photos)

KTPRIGS QUM Little Ambassador Workshop with Girl Guide Malaysia and Al Syifa Pharmacy

The QUM Little Ambassador workshop was participated by 20 primary and secondary school students among the GGM members from the district of Lipis, Jerantut and Bera, Pahang. The programme started with 10 hands-on teaching of various QUM components in the morning and proceed with 5 OSCE stations in the afternoon to evaluate their understanding. Public Health Event 2024: Sustainable Health for All

The Kulliyyah of Pharmacy at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in collaboration with the Sustainable Initiatives toward Health Living and Environment for Sejahtera Community (SITEC) flagship, organized the Public Health Event 2024 on January 13th. Held at the Islamic Primary School Indera Mahkota in Kuantan, the event aimed to:

  • Enhance knowledge and health awareness among the school community, particularly teachers and students.
  • Conduct health screenings for blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood glucose, carbon monoxide levels, and body mass index.
  • Provide consultations with pharmacy lecturers on various health concerns and medication.
  • Promote sustainable health practices through educational talks, booth exhibitions, and activities.

A Team Effort for Community Well-being

Representing the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norny Syafinaz Ab Rahman, Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, along with Dr. Nor Ilyani Mohamed Nazar, Dr. Nor Hidayah Mohd Taufek, Dr. Syahrir Zaini, Sr. Nurul Syafiqah Othman, and 4th-year Public Health pharmacy students. The team conducted health screenings for 50 members of the school community, providing valuable data on their health status. Additionally, they organized a health exhibition covering various topics like diabetes, obesity, vaping and smoking cessation, mental health, and Know Your Medicine. To keep the children engaged, fun mini-games were also incorporated into the event. Dr. Ilyani was an invited speaker who delivered an informative talk on smoking and vaping, as well as substance use highlighting its negative health consequences and encouraging participants to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Student Engagement and Community Impact

The event served as a valuable learning experience for the pharmacy students. They had the opportunity to:

  • Apply their knowledge and skills to address real-world health issues.
  • Observe consultations with experienced pharmacy lecturers.
  • Develop their communication and presentation skills by sharing their findings in a seminar.
  • Contribute to the community’s well-being and fulfill their social responsibility.

Empowering Individuals for Lasting Change

The Public Health Event 2024 went beyond just providing information. It empowered participants to take charge of their health through:

  • Comprehensive health awareness sessions on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, and eating a balanced diet.
  • Individual consultations with pharmacy lecturers to address specific health concerns and medication queries.
  • Guidance on managing medications to ensure adherence and optimal health outcomes.

The event has successfully promoted sustainable health practices within the community. It equipped individuals with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed choices and prioritize their well-being, paving the way for a healthier future.

Public Health Event : Community Engagement Programme Kulliyyah of Pharmacy and Kampung Alor Batu, Jabor, Kuantan Pahang.

On the 8 th of January 2023, a total of 47 fourth-year students of the Kulliyyah of Pharmacy
have successfully organized a Community Engagement Programme for Public Health
Pharmacy course assessment at Kampung Alor Batu, Jabor. The event included health
screening activities which were cholesterol, glucose, carbon monoxide, blood pressure and
body mass index assessment among 35 villagers in collaboration with JKKK Kampung Alor
Batu Jabor. Health exhibition addressing topics of using devices and medication, smoking,
influenza, and other health issues were also included. Findings from the programme were
presented in a seminar by the students highlighting data obtained from the programme, its
interpretation, and recommended strategies to address the health issues. Among the issues
identified were uncontrolled blood sugar, cholesterol, use of supplements, lack of health
literacy and cigarette smoking. The students were accompanied by Dr. Tengku Karmila
Tengku Kamil, Dr. Nor Hidayah Mohd Taufek and Dr. Norny Syafinaz Ab Rahman. Students
had the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills addressing health issues of the local
community, observe the consultation with pharmacy lecturers and realise their potential and
responsibility to contribute to the community. The programme was beneficial for the villagers
since they have not received any health screening since before the COVID-1 pandemic and
they had a great opportunity to discuss about their health concerns.
