Bridging the Nusantara: The Meaningful Success of “Wings of Language: Banten Edition 2.0”
The Kulliyyah of Education (KOED), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), through the English Language Teaching Students’ Association (ELTSA), has successfully concluded Wings of Language: Banten Edition 2.0, an international educational outreach programme held from 12 to 19 September 2026 at Pondok Pesantren Modern Al-Mizan, Banten, Indonesia. Led by the ELTSA Advisor, Asst. Prof. Dr. Haziqah Zulaikha Aris, a delegation of 27 IIUM TESL students embarked on a meaningful journey of teaching, service and intercultural engagement, bringing the gift of language to 227 student participants. Throughout the programme, the students demonstrated remarkable adaptability, empathy and commitment to service, thoughtfully responding to the local context and adapting their teaching approaches to create an inclusive and engaging learning environment. Through their efforts, they encouraged participants to communicate in English with greater confidence while fostering meaningful connections across cultures. Beyond the classroom, the programme became a platform for intercultural learning, student leadership and community engagement. Through genuine interaction and peer learning, the IIUM students and their Indonesian counterparts built meaningful connections that extended beyond language, fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the bonds between Malaysia and Indonesia. Reflecting on the experience, Dr. Haziqah highlighted how international educational engagement allows students to move beyond the role of club representatives and grow as young educators, cultural bridge-builders and ambassadors of the university. Exposure to real-world educational contexts strengthened their adaptability, intercultural competence, leadership and ability to respond to challenges with ihsan and resilience. KOED celebrates the dedication, courage and spirit of service demonstrated by its TESL students, as well as the support of all partners who made this journey possible. May the educational bonds forged through Wings of Language continue to flourish, bringing lasting benefit to both communities and becoming a form of sadaqah jariyah through knowledge, service and shared humanity.
