Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) Kulliyyah of Medicine aims to become a leading department of educational excellence and research. It seeks to nurture and prepare ‘Phase I’ preclinical students in the progressive and dynamic direction to become a professionally excellent and good Muslim physicians for the Ummah. 

    • To impart basic knowledge and skills on various aspects of basic medical sciences
    • To lay a strong foundation and critical thinking skills to ‘Phase I’ students to become life-long learner and to prepare them for higher study and research
    • To make our students aware about the rapid development and advancements in the field of basic medical sciences. 
    • To foster our students with theoretical and applied knowledge to understand the interrelationship between basic medical sciences and clinical medicine through didactic lectures, practicals, seminars, problem-based learning, case discussion, team based learning and self learning
    • To train postgraduate students of various discipline in health sciences with adequate knowledge and research skill to fit them for the growing need of human resources of academia and industries both at national and international levels
    • To conduct quality cost-effective multi-disciplinary research and to have potential collaboration/net work
    • To be actively involved in sustainable community projects and community-based education and research.

Undergraduate Programme

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) is primarily involved in the teaching of the Phase I MBBS programme, which spans over the first two years. The main objective of this phase is for the students to understand the mechanisms of bodily functions in health and disease from the biological, behavioral, epidemiological and social aspects. Students are taught to integrate knowledge from the different disciplines into a meaningful whole and to acquire skills in reasoning and deduction in order to solve medical and related problems.

Subjects covered in the two years are: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Psychiatry, Biostatistics and Epidemiology. The teaching-learning is done in an integrated manner and several clinical correlation classes are held. Integrated Islamic Medical Programme (IIMP) classes are held throughout the 2 years.  In order to achieve the objectives of Phase I of the programme teaching is divided into four blocks in each of the two years.

The teaching-learning methodologies include formal interactive lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, problem based learning sessions, case discussions and student seminars. Examinations are held at the end of each of the 8 blocks and the first professional examination at the end of Phase I. An external Examiner is invited to assess the standard of the examination. Assessment is carried out through Multiple Choice Questions (True/False), Essay, Short Notes, Problem Based Questions and Objectively Structured Practical Examinations.

Postgraduate Programme

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) also offers courses and programme for postgraduate students, master’s and PhD programme, mixed mode and research. The academic staff also play major role in conducting research in the basic medical sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, parasitology and microbiology. 

The postgraduate students are taught to integrate knowledge from the different disciplines into a meaningful whole and to acquire skills in reasoning and deduction in order to solve medical and related problems. The teaching-learning is done in an integrated manner. Islamisation of Human Knowledge in Medicine course is one of the compulsory of the Kulliyyah Required Courses for graduation. 

The faculty members are also actively engaged in research activities, including collaborations with other institutions both locally and internationally. The department also provides services to the community through its research activities and community outreach programs.

The teaching-learning methodologies include formal interactive lectures, practical sessions, problem based learning sessions, student seminars and journal critiques. For the Master of Medical Sciences (Mixed Mode), examinations are held at the end of each of the semester. Assessment is carried out through Essay and Short Notes.
