Vision & Mission
Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) Kulliyyah of Medicine aims to become a leading department of educational excellence and research. It seeks to nurture and prepare ‘Phase I’ preclinical students in the progressive and dynamic direction to become a professionally excellent and good Muslim physicians for the Ummah.
- To impart basic knowledge and skills on various aspects of basic medical sciences
- To lay a strong foundation and critical thinking skills to ‘Phase I’ students to become life-long learner and to prepare them for higher study and research
- To make our students aware about the rapid development and advancements in the field of basic medical sciences.
- To foster our students with theoretical and applied knowledge to understand the interrelationship between basic medical sciences and clinical medicine through didactic lectures, practicals, seminars, problem-based learning, case discussion, team based learning and self learning.
- To train postgraduate students of various discipline in health sciences with adequate knowledge and research skill to fit them for the growing need of human resources of academia and industries both at national and international levels
- To conduct quality cost-effective multi-disciplinary research and to have potential collaboration/net work

Recent Activities
BMS POSTGRADUATE MEET & GREET 2023
The BMS Postgraduate Meet & Greet was held on 19th October 2023 for the newly enrolled postgraduate students for Semester 1 session 2023/2024.
The session started by Welcoming speech by BMS Postgraduate Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hairul Aini Hamzah.
Then the students were introduced to the Deputy Dean Postgraduate Office Representative and BMS PG team members. After that, the ice breaking session with the Head of Department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yusoff Sharizal Yusoff Azmi Merican followed by a sharing session by our BMS Postgraduate alumni, Asst. Prof. Dr Aszrin Abdullah and Asst. Prof. Dr. Nour El Huda Abd Rahim.
The session ended at around 11am with a light refreshment.
BMS COFFEE CLUB DAY 2023
The first ever CCD was held on 14th October 2023 in Villa Kuchinta, Kg. Cherok Paloh. Members of the department and their families spent a day full of laughter, bonding and much needed healing.
The event started at 8:30am with the arrival of the guests, followed by a nice nasi lemak breakfast. The guests then participated in various activities such as a mini Treasure Hunt, telematches, Gift exchange and tazkirah.
The kids had so much fun playing & swiming in the pool.
The event ended at around 1:00pm with a ‘kampung style nasi campur’ lunch. It is hoped that CCD will become a yearly Department event.
MBBS YEAR 2 SESSION WITH THE HOD
MBBS Year 2 students (Aethra) session with the head of BMS department, Asst. Prof. Dr. Yusoff Sharizal was held on Wednesday 11 October 2023. The objective was to have a face-to-face discussion on various matters related to academics, student welfare and overall learning experience improvements.
The session started at 8.45am with the opening remark by Dr. Yusoff in the Lecture Hall 2 followed by solat hajat & Yaasin recitation in KOM musolla led by Dr. Asyraf. The session was also attended by our lecturers and support staff.
The session ended at around 10am with light refreshments.
Hopefully we can have a session like this again in future.
BMS POSTGRADUATE ROADSHOW 2023
Postgraduate Roadshow in Basic Medical Sciences was held on Thursday 14 September 2023. The objective was to attract students from Year 5 (Misykat). For some it was a meeting of old teachers & students, hopefully we met some future postgraduates too.

Undergraduate Programme
The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) is primarily involved in the teaching of the Phase I MBBS programme, which spans over the first two years. The main objective of this phase is for the students to understand the mechanisms of bodily functions in health and disease from the biological, behavioral, epidemiological and social aspects. Students are taught to integrate knowledge from the different disciplines into a meaningful whole and to acquire skills in reasoning and deduction in order to solve medical and related problems.
Subjects covered in the two years are: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Parasitology, Psychiatry, Biostatistics and Epidemiology. The teaching-learning is done in an integrated manner and several clinical correlation classes are held. Integrated Islamic Medical Programme (IIMP) classes are held throughout the 2 years. In order to achieve the objectives of Phase I of the programme teaching is divided into four blocks in each of the two years.
The teaching-learning methodologies include formal interactive lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, problem based learning sessions, case discussions and student seminars. Examinations are held at the end of each of the 8 blocks and the first professional examination at the end of Phase I. An external Examiner is invited to assess the standard of the examination. Assessment is carried out through Multiple Choice Questions (True/False), Essay, Short Notes, Problem Based Questions and Objectively Structured Practical Examinations.

Postgraduate Programme
The Department of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS) also offers courses and programme for postgraduate students, master’s and PhD programme, mixed mode and research. The academic staff also play major role in conducting research in the basic medical sciences, including anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, parasitology and microbiology.
The postgraduate students are taught to integrate knowledge from the different disciplines into a meaningful whole and to acquire skills in reasoning and deduction in order to solve medical and related problems. The teaching-learning is done in an integrated manner. Islamisation of Human Knowledge in Medicine course is one of the compulsory of the Kulliyyah Required Courses for graduation.
The faculty members are also actively engaged in research activities, including collaborations with other institutions both locally and internationally. The department also provides services to the community through its research activities and community outreach programs.
The teaching-learning methodologies include formal interactive lectures, practical sessions, problem based learning sessions, student seminars and journal critiques. For the Master of Medical Sciences (Mixed Mode), examinations are held at the end of each of the semester. Assessment is carried out through Essay and Short Notes.

The Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Kulliyyah of Medicine is an integrated and comprehensive department which consist of twelve (12) basic medical disciplines; Anatomy, Histology, Electron Microscope, Biochemistry, Molecular, Proteomic, Microbiology, Immunology, Parasitology, Virology, Physiology and Pharmacology.
BMS Laboratory Management is a sub-organization under the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Kulliyyah of Medicine which provides laboratory services mainly to the undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in terms of routine practical teaching and learning process as well as research.
The BMS Laboratory Management consist three (3) integrated research unit and one (1) teaching laboratories which are:
- Imaging – Medical Museum – Anatomy (IMAN)
- Biochemistry-Molecular-Proteomic unit (BMOLEP)
- Microbiology-Physiology-Pharmacology unit (MPP)
- Integrated Teaching Laboratory (INTEL)
Each unit are divided into three (3) to four (4) subunits based on disciplines, methodology and instrumentation. In line with the mission of IIUM, the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, Kulliyyah of Medicine provides research services and facilities in the field of basic medicine and health sciences where it is able to be a good platform to produce quality and excellent graduates. The research services and facilities cater not only for Kulliyyah of Medicine but also for the whole IIUM campus (Kuantan and Gombak), as well as external agencies.
The BMS Laboratory Management team are led by BMS Laboratory Coordinator and the team are consisting Science Officers (SO), Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLT) and Attendants.
