A COMPREHENSIVE ACT ON CLIMATE CHANGE IS URGENTLY REQUIRED, APART FROM PRUDENT AND ETHICAL DECISION-MAKING AND BEHAVIOUR, TO MITIGATE AND TO ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Gombak, 28 September 2022. The meeting between the Climate Change Policy and Law Centre (CCPL Centre), Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) and the Environment and Climate Change Committee of the Malaysian Bar Council concludes that the nation requires urgent actions to mitigate and to adapt to climate change. The collaboration between the CCPL Centre and the Committee could be a catalyst, be it small, in such an effort.

Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib, the Dean of Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws and a member of the CCPL Centre in welcoming Mr Roger Chan Weng Keng, the Chairman of the Environment and Climate Change Committee of the Malaysian Bar Council and his team points that the window for mitigation and adaptation to climate change is rapidly closing. He welcomes serious discussion between the Kulliyyah and the Centre with the Committee to help the nation to take the necessary action.

Mr Roger Chan Weng Keng welcomes the timely establishment of the CCPL Centre as another platform for the Committee to collaborate in taking concrete steps to mitigate and to adapt to climate change.  He points out the academic resources behind the Centre is essential in getting things moving.

Assoc Prof Dr Maizatun Mustafa, the Coordinator of the CCPL Centre, and Assoc Prof Dr Zuraidah Ali, the Director of the Harun M. Hashim Law Centre explain one of the works of the CCPL Centre together with Harun M. Hashim Law Centre in developing a specialisation of climate change law under the existing LLM in International Law manages by Harun M. Hashim Law Centre.

Other members of the Environment and Climate Change Committee, namely Mr Kiu Jia Yaw, Mr Amin Abdul Majid, Mr Darren Lai Xuenwei, Mr Selvanathan Subramaniam, Ms Kwong Chiew Ee and Mr Abang Iwawan offer their expertise and experience in working together with the Kulliyyah and the CCPL Centre to ensure concrete steps are taken regarding climate change.

Members of the CCPL Centre, including Prof Dr Sharifah Zubaidah Syed Abdul Kader, Dr Wan Mohd Zulhafiz Wan Zahari and Dr Sonny Zulhuda welcome the offer of assistance and collaboration from the Environment and Climate Change Committee.
