In an effort to bolster safety protocols and minimize occupational hazards, the Kulliyyah of Nursing Safety, Health, and Environment Committee (KONSHEC) organised a comprehensive “Needle Prick Awareness Programme.” Held on 19th March 2024, at the Biobehavioral Laboratory, the programme aimed to equip nursing students with essential knowledge and skills to prevent needle prick injuries in clinical settings.

Under the theme “Love Life, Avoid Prick,” the programme featured an exciting lecture and demonstration session by the invited speakers; Sr. Zuwainah Hamzah from the Kulliyyah of Dentistry and Br. Muhammad Azim Kamaruzaman from the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM).

With 30 enthusiastic participants from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, the event served as a crucial platform to address the critical issue of needle prick injuries. These incidents pose significant risks to healthcare workers, particularly nursing students who frequently handle sharp objects during clinical attachments and throughout their careers.

During the programme, the participants gained invaluable insights into the causes and consequences of needle prick injuries, as well as practical strategies to mitigate such risks effectively. Sr. Zuwainah Hamzah and Br. Muhammad Azim Kamaruzaman provided expert guidance on proper handling techniques, safe disposal methods, and the importance of maintaining vigilance in high-risk environments.

Speaking about the significance of the programme, Dr. Rusila Ruslan who represent the organiser emphasized its role in fostering a culture of safety and accountability among nursing students. By raising awareness and imparting crucial skills, the initiative aims to empower future nurses to prioritize their well-being while delivering quality care to patients.

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like the “Needle Prick Awareness Programme” highlighted the importance of proactive measures in safeguarding the welfare of healthcare professionals. Through education, collaboration, and innovation, stakeholders can collectively strive towards a safer and healthier work environment for all.
