IIUM Students Shine in Sakura Science Exchange Program

Nine students from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) recently participated in the esteemed Sakura Science Exchange Student Program, generously sponsored by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Organized collaboratively by the College of Nursing and Art Science at the University of Hyogo, Japan, and IIUM Malaysia, the program aimed to foster academic and cultural exchange between the two nations. Accompanying the students was Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Kamil bin Che Hasan, the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing.

The participants, comprising a mix of PhD, master’s, and bachelor’s students from IIUM, embarked on a journey of learning and exploration from the 17th to the 22nd of February 2024. The program commenced with a warm welcome, featuring cultural exchanges such as sushi preparation, origami sessions, and insights into the traditional festival of Hina Matsuri.

Over the following days, the students engaged in a diverse range of activities aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills. This included a two-day intensive workshop on disaster nursing and shelter management, featuring lectures and tabletop exercises. A pivotal aspect of the program was a visit to the Disaster Museum, offering an immersive experience commemorating the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. The visit included a 4D earthquake simulation, thematic exhibitions, and demonstrations on earthquake science and fast response techniques.

Further enriching their experience, the students visited the Red Cross Hospital in Kobe, where they were introduced to various units and departments, including the intensive care unit, operating theatre, and emergency department. Explorations of cultural landmarks such as Akashi Castle and Kitano Street near Kobe provided insights into the multiethnicity and diversity of Japan’s urban landscape.

Additionally, the students had the opportunity to visit the educational facilities at the College of Nursing and Art Science, University of Hyogo, gaining insights into library resources, lecture halls, and student facilities. Faculty mentor meetings tailored to their specialization areas further enhanced their learning experience.

The program also included a city tour of Kobe and Osaka, led by local students, providing the IIUM participants with a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and heritage.

In a culminating presentation session, IIUM-PhD student cum UNIMAS staff, Mohammed Rasheedan distinguished himself by winning the Best Presenter Award for his engaging presentation titled “From Kuching to Hyogo: A Memoir of Japan.” This accolade not only reflects the academic excellence of IIUM but also underscores the success of collaborative initiatives like the Sakura Science Exchange Program in fostering international understanding and cooperation.

The participation of IIUM students in this exchange program signifies Malaysia’s commitment to promoting global partnerships in education and research. As these young scholars return home enriched with new knowledge and experiences, they are poised to contribute positively to their respective fields and further strengthen the bonds between Malaysia and Japan.

Master In Nursing Exchange Programme from UMY!

Universitas Brawijaya Students Ace 5 Nursing Courses in Semester 1, 2023/2024!

Today, amidst a sense of camaraderie and achievement, the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM bid farewell with a heavy heart to our four Nursing students which also the participants of the Student Exchange Program from Universitas Brawijaya to the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. The exchange programme, which began on 4th October 2023, and lasted until 14th February 2024, concluded with a simple yet meaningful farewell ceremony marking the end of a transformative journey.

Under the guidance of Dr. Haliza Hasan from the Department of Special Care Nursing, Sr. Herdyana Lintang Sari, Sr. Laelatul Siti Nur Rohmah, Sr. Risma Dwi Rahmawati, and Br. Muhammad Andre Sugiharto immersed themselves in a rigorous academic curriculum. Throughout one semester, they diligently pursued five nursing courses offered by various departments of Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, enhancing their knowledge and skills in the field.

The farewell ceremony, chaired by Dr. Abdul Alif Abdul Hamid, the Deputy Dean of Student Development and Community Engagement (DDSDCE), highlighted their dedication and experiences for the past 5 months. Dr. Abdul Alif expressed a massive gratitude on behalf of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM and presented them with tokens of appreciation, recognizing their crucial role in fostering cross-cultural exchange and academic excellence. Beyond academic pursuits, the participants actively engaged in various events and community outreach programs organised by the universities, reflecting a commitment to collaboration and service.

As they move forward in their academic and professional journeys, the KON community extends heartfelt wishes to Sr. Herdyana Lintang Sari, Sr. Laelatul Siti Nur Rohmah, Sr. Risma Dwi Rahmawati, and Br. Muhammad Andre Sugiharto. May they carry the lessons learned and friendships formed during their time at IIUM, continuing to inspire excellence and collaboration in all their endeavors.

This effort and occasion also marks the successful conclusion of a chapter in international academic exchange, demonstrating the transformative impact of cultural immersion and scholarly collaboration.

Breast Cancer Awareness Programme

On the 27th of January, an event unfolded virtually on the Zoom platform, the Breast Cancer Awareness Programme held hybrid, organized by the NURA 4412 Continuous Nursing Education Section 1 of the Kulliyyah of Nursing at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan Campus. This programme collaboratively organized with the National Cancer Council (MAKNA), Ikram Akademia, and Persatuan Suri Rumah Rahmah that aimed to explained to the society about breast cancer and fortify individuals with knowledge on prevention, early detection, and self-examination practices.

Under the good guidance of the organizing committee, led by Programme Manager Br. Mohd Iqbal bin Roslan and Secretaries, Sr. Ainun Hafizhah binti Zulkarnain and Sr. Tengku Nur Aisyah Ihsan binti Tg Yunus the event seamlessly unfolded. Sr. Tengku Nur Aisyah Ihsan binti Tg Yunus also served as the emcee for the program. The committee’s dedication and coordination, represent of Programme Coordinator Br. Ameer Aiman bin Muhammad Abir, and Public Relations, Sr. Nur Athirah binti Ibrahim, were the crucial in ensuring the program’s success. Smooth technical preparations during the program provided by Br. Mohamad Asyraf bin Mohd Zin, Sr. Nurul Syazwani binti Zaharudin, and Sr. Nik Nursyuhada binti Nik Ali. Publication and promotion were adeptly handled by Sr. El Liyana binti Mt Ngainon and Sr. Nurin Afrina binti Guntoro, ensuring maximum outreach and engagement. Special tasks were carried out by created pre and post evaluation and analysed after the programmed done by Che Sr. Siti Nur Ajeerah binti Che Awang, Sr. Nurintan Mastura binti Mohamed Ismail, and Sr. Damia binti Alias.

The programme started with distribution of registration form via a link and scanned code. Then preparation and technician committee distributed pre-evaluation form using same method as registration. The program then started with a heartening recitation of Asmaul Husna, Negaraku, and IIUM song followed by a solemn Doa recitation by Br. Ameer Aiman. Asst. Prof. Dr. Siti Noorkhairina binti Sowtali which is the course advisor made the program better with a short inspiring speech during the opening ceremony, emphasizing the significance of awareness and early detection. Then, emcee pass the insightful talks to speaker from MAKNA, Br. Ahmad Nu’man bin Abdul Rahman that enlighten the prevention, early detection and breast self-examination. Practical demonstrations on breast self-examination further empowered participants with tangible skills. Heartfelt sharing sessions continued by Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, a breast cancer survivor, provided invaluable perspectives and encouragement. She also shared her past experiences and the challenges she faced when diagnosed with cancer during her studies abroad.

Interactive sessions, including Q&A segments and quizzes, fostered engagement and learning. The event end with a post-evaluation and a closing ceremony, followed by a photography session to to capture the memorable moments. As a gesture of appreciation, Asst. Prof. Dr. Siti Noorkhairina binti Sowtali treated the committee to sumptuous refreshments and extended tokens of gratitude to three top difference participants score between pre and post evaluation and to notable speakers, Dr. Nurul’Ain Binti Ahayalimudin and Br Ahmad Nu’man Bin Abdul Rahman, for their invaluable contributions.

In essence, the Breast Cancer Awareness Program the event was seen as a source of inspiration or guidance for others in term of education on all who participated, reaffirming the commitment to raising awareness and fostering a community of support in the fight against breast cancer.

Completion of PSU (Pattani Campus) Nursing Students Internship Inbound Mobility with IIUM

The closing ceremony of the PSU (Pattani Campus) Nursing Students Internship Inbound Mobility with IIUM was held on the 8th of February 2024 at the Kulliyyah of Nursing Meeting Room. This ceremony marked the successful conclusion of 5 weeks of clinical attachment at SASMEC @IIUM and Kulliyyah of Nursing for the participating students.

In conjunction with the closing ceremony, the students presented their Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Presentation on their latest initiative titled “Early Warning Signs of Phlebitis Chart.” This innovative project was supervised by Dr. Patimah Abd Wahab (KON, IIUM) and Dr. Hasanah Pairoh (Faculty of Nursing, PSU).

The session was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including the Dean of Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, and the Deputy Dean Academic and Internationalisation, Prof. Dr. Mohd Said Nurumal. Additionally, members of Kulliyyah and the accompanying lecturer, Dr. Hasanah Pairoh, were also in attendance.

During the ceremony, the students, Sr. Nadiyah Masae, Sr. Metinee Thipsuwansiri, and Sr. Arwatif Karee, were presented with their certifications for their exemplary performance and dedication throughout the 5-week project. Prof. Dr. Mohd Said Nurumal conferred the certifications, acknowledging their hard work and contributions to the program.

Syoknya Dakwah!

Location: Auditorium Kulliyyah of Nursing, Kampung Bukit Bangkong, Pekan Sungai Lembing, Kuantan

The Islamisation of Human Knowledge (IOHK) Kulliyyah of Nursing, in collaboration with Majlis Ugama Islam dan Adat Resam Melayu Pahang (MUIP), Jabatan Agama Islam, and several NGOs in Kuantan, Pahang, hosted the enlightening event, Syoknya Dakwah. The event aimed to foster understanding and dialogue about various religions and cultures, drawing participation from a diverse group of 93 individuals.

Renowned speakers delivered talks on different aspects of religion and belief systems. Dato’ Hj. Abdul Zaki Md Zain discussed Islam as the religion for everyone, while Ustaz Mohd Fadzil Mat Saman shared insights into the beliefs of the Orang Asal/Asli community. Mr. Muhammad Azim Abdullah Suhaimin provided an introduction to Christianity, and Mr. Adam Tan Jian Yang shed light on Hinduism and Buddhism.

Beyond theoretical discussions, the event facilitated friendly bonding between participants and the communities of Kampung Bukit Bangkong and Pekan Sungai Lembing. Engaging in sharing sessions and discussions, participants gained valuable insights into the cultures and traditions of the local communities. The event also featured recreational activities, including games like futsal, adding a fun-filled dimension to the proceedings. These activities not only entertained participants but also fostered camaraderie and unity among attendees.

Syoknya Dakwah proved to be a resounding success, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds to learn, share, and connect. By promoting interfaith understanding and fostering community engagement, the event left a lasting impact on all involved. Kudos to the organizers and participants for their efforts in making this event a memorable and impactful experience.

First Aid Awareness Program at CFS IIUM

Mahallah Umamah, under the astute guidance of Advisor Mdm Aida, recently hosted an enlightening Introduction to First Aid workshop in collaboration with Flagship 3.0 CBFA. The event, held at CFS IIUM Gambang, welcomed participants eager to acquire essential first aid skills and knowledge. Inviting Flagship 3.0 CBFA to lead the event added expertise and credibility to the initiative. Under the expertise of Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, Project Leader of Flagship 3.0 CBFA, participants were treated to an insightful first aid talk. Dr. Nurul’Ain expertise, coupled with the support of Dr. Shidqiyyah Abdul Hamid, Sr. Siti Nafizah Hj Mohamed Bassri, and Sr. Nadia Gzali, ensured a comprehensive and engaging demonstration session.

Flagship 3.0 CBFA’s dedication to widening awareness of first aid was evident in their strategic outreach efforts. Having previously engaged with university and secondary school students around Kuantan, our focus shifted to pre-university students at CFS IIUM Gambang for this event. This transition reflects our commitment to reaching diverse audiences and equipping them with life-saving skills.

The collaboration between Mahallah Umamah and Flagship 3.0 CBFA resulted in a successful event that empowered pre-university students with life-saving skills. The expertise of Flagship 3.0 CBFA coupled with a great commitment and involvement of all participants, exemplifies the spirit of cooperation and commitment to safety within the CFS IIUM Gambang community.

Psychological First Aid: Train the Trainer

In a concerted effort to bolster community-based first aid initiatives, the Flagship 3.0 CBFA team from Kulliyyah of Science orchestrated a comprehensive “Psychological First Aid: train the Trainer” course. With a diverse turnout of 20 participants, comprising lecturers and staff from both the Kulliyyah of Science and the Kulliyyah of Nursing, the session aimed to fortify the capabilities of CBFA members in delivering effective training on psychological first aid. Facilitated by esteemed speakers Prof. Dr. Salizar Mohamed Ludin and Dr. Nurasikin Mohamad Shariff, the event unfolded as an engaging exploration into the intricate dynamics of psychological first aid within emergency contexts.

Throughout the session, participants were immersed in a multifaceted learning experience, blending theoretical frameworks with practical exercises and real-life case studies. Prof. Dr. Salizar Mohamed Ludin and Dr. Nurasikin Mohamad Shariff, drawing from their wealth of expertise, navigated attendees through the core principles of psychological first aid, stressing the paramount importance of nurturing emotional well-being alongside physical health in crisis situations. Interactive discussions and group activities further enriched the learning process, fostering a collaborative environment conducive to knowledge exchange and skill development.

The event not only served as a platform for honing individual proficiency but also catalyzed cross-disciplinary collaboration between participants from different academic backgrounds. By bridging the gap between the realms of science, health and nursing, the session underscored the significance of a holistic approach to first aid, one that encompasses both physical and psychological dimensions. Moreover, the networking opportunities afforded by the event paved the way for ongoing dialogue and partnership-building among stakeholders invested in community health and well-being.

As the curtains drew, the participants emerged equipped with newfound insights and practical strategies to disseminate within their respective spheres of influence. Armed with enhanced training skills and a deeper understanding of psychological first aid principles, CBFA members are poised to effect positive change in their communities, amplifying awareness and resilience in the face of adversity. The event stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of Kulliyyah of Science and Kulliyyah of Nursing to fostering a culture of proactive and holistic first aid practices, laying the groundwork for a healthier and more resilient society.
