Preceptorship Training for Nurses 2025
The programme received technical support from the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) and brought together 26 experienced, skilled and competent staff nurses representing various wards, units and clinics across SASMEC @IIUM. The training was carefully designed to strengthen their roles as preceptors — professional mentors responsible for guiding junior nurses and nursing students towards safe, effective and patient-centred care.
Beyond clinical supervision, the programme highlighted the broader role of a preceptor as an educator, role model, communicator and leader who contributes directly to the professional development of future nurses.
Day 1: Knowledge Empowerment and Collaborative Discussion
The programme commenced with an opening ceremony officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. In his address, he emphasised the vital role of preceptors in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice.
He highlighted the importance of ensuring that nursing students develop not only clinical competence, but also empathy, integrity and professionalism in accordance with IIUM’s Tawhidic vision.
The first day featured a series of enriching lectures delivered by nursing academics from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, including Dr Siti Hazariah Abdul Hamid, Dr Norfadzilah Ahmad and Dr Hasanah Pairoh.
During the afternoon session, participants were divided into four teams for a series of team-building and collaborative discussions focusing on real-world challenges and recurring issues encountered in clinical environments.
The discussions were dynamic and solution-focused, encouraging the participants to explore practical and innovative approaches to preceptorship. Each group was subsequently tasked with preparing a role-play presentation for the second day, providing an opportunity to demonstrate teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills in realistic clinical mentorship situations.
The group discussions were facilitated by a team led by Dr Hanida Hani Mohd Mokhtar, together with experienced academic staff from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM.
Day 2: Interactive Learning and Role-Play Excellence
The second day continued with a series of interactive learning sessions delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr Siti Noorkhairina Sowtali, Assoc. Prof. Dr Aniawanis Makhtar and Dr Ashikin Atan.
The sessions focused on strengthening the participants’ ability to assess clinical competence, provide constructive feedback and lead with emotional, spiritual and ethical awareness.
Following the lectures, participants took to the stage to present their role-play scenarios. The presentations portrayed realistic clinical mentorship situations and demonstrated how the participants could apply their newly acquired knowledge to workplace challenges.
The groups impressed the facilitators through their creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and ability to translate preceptorship principles into practical action.
The programme combined academic knowledge, collaborative discussion and practical simulation to strengthen participants as mentors, educators and clinical leaders within SASMEC @IIUM.
Closing Ceremony: Recognising Excellence and Commitment
The programme concluded with a closing ceremony officiated by Mdm Asmawati Che Ismail, Head of the Department of Human Resource, SASMEC @IIUM.
In her remarks, she congratulated all participants for their active engagement throughout the two-day programme and expressed her appreciation to the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM for its valuable collaboration, expertise and continued commitment to strengthening nursing professional development.
Tokens of appreciation and certificates were presented during the closing session in recognition of the commitment and contributions of the participants, facilitators and organising team.
This Preceptorship Training marks another milestone in our continuous effort to build a culture of mentorship and clinical excellence at SASMEC @IIUM. We hope every participant will bring this spirit of learning and leadership back to their respective units.
The two-day training strengthened the professional collaboration between SASMEC @IIUM and the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, while reaffirming their shared commitment to advancing high-quality clinical nursing education.
Through initiatives such as the Preceptorship Training for Nurses 2025, both institutions continue to cultivate competent, compassionate and confident nurses who are prepared to guide the next generation of nursing professionals while embodying the principles of Sejahtera and Ummatic Excellence.
