Zaid Bazaar : “Iftar, Where Muamalat Meets Barakah”

By: Nurin Alya Zamri The primary objective of the program is to cater the food issue due to the lack of food variety in Mahallah Zaid Bin Harithah. In addition, it seeks to support the local vendors around Pagoh, Muar, Johor to improve their stability in the economy, especially during Ramadan. This program was organized by Mahallah Representative Committee Entrepreneurship (MRC) 22/23 and continued by a new tenure, MRC of Entrepreneurship 23/24 with a new name, which is Zaid Bazaar which started on 12th March until 4th April 2024. This initiative is aligned with the vision and mission of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), aiming to nurture the quality of holistic excellence which is imbued with Islamic moral-spiritual values, in the process of learning, teaching, research, consultancy, publication, administration and student life. The program began with the preparation of vendors setting up their tents and raw ingredients for the day. IIUM students as well as Edu Hub students from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) and Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir (PTSN) crowded around the café Mahallah Zaid Bin Harithah’s compound at peak hour, around 5 pm every day since the Bazaar started at 4 pm until Iftar.  As the program aims to help local vendors including students’ small businesses to enhance their income, it strengthens the ukhuwah between IIUM students and Edu Hub students with the local community. The program ended with an informal closing ceremony attended only by the Entrepreneurship Club members to celebrate the success of the program and to evaluate the feedback received by the IIUM students and Edu students. Furthermore, the Program Manager of Zaid Bazaar, Nur Anis Shahirah gave encouraging remarks for the continuation of this program in an improved version, presumably in Ramadan 2025.

Held from 12th March to 6th April 2024, this initiative aimed to enliven the month through spiritually enriching activities that fostered a sense of unity and reflection. The official launch took place at the Musolla after the first taraweeh prayer, with Dr. Mohamad Suhaizi bin Suhaimi, Principal of Mahallah Zaid Bin Harithah, presiding over the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event welcomed over 1,400 participants, including all residents of Mahallah Zaid Bin Harithah (MZH), prominent figures from the Kulliyyah of Sustainable Tourism and Contemporary Languages, and the surrounding community members near the Pagoh Education Hub. Throughout Ramadan, Ramadan Fi Qalbi: “The Touch of Bless” offered a series of programs with diverse activities, each curated to deepen spiritual awareness, foster cultural understanding, and enhance community ties. The flagship activities included the Sayembara Ramadan competition, One Ummah Many Traditions Webinar on Ramadan experiences across the world, and Ikatan Budi Nirmala, a traditional cooking event centred on the distribution of bubur lambuk, a cherished Ramadan dish. A key objective of the program was to help students focus on achieving Allah’s pleasure (Mardhatillah) through engaging in religious and spiritual activities. The Ramadan with Love: Healing with Quran event exemplified this, combining tadarus sessions under the guidance of naqib or naqibah, and a khatam Quran ceremony, where students collectively completed the Quran. Meanwhile, the Sayembara Ramadan offered students a platform to showcase their talents in religious disciplines, including adhan, khat (Islamic calligraphy), tilawah, and hafazan (memorisation) competitions, fostering a stronger connection with their faith. The One Ummah Many Traditions Webinar – Ramadan Chronicles Worldwide was a unique addition, featuring international students from France, Japan, and the United States. This webinar highlighted Ramadan experiences from different cultures, offering insights into the global Muslim community’s shared devotion despite cultural differences. This subprogram provided an invaluable opportunity for IIUM Pagoh students to connect with Muslims around the world, broadening their perspectives and fostering a sense of international solidarity and empathy. The Ikatan Budi Nirmala program, which centred on the cooking and distribution of bubur lambuk, was another impactful initiative. By working together to prepare and share this traditional dish, students not only strengthened their friendships within IIUM but also reached out to students from neighbouring campuses, including UTHM and Politeknik Pagoh. This activity was a tangible expression of empathy, as students collaborated to distribute the dish to fellow students, cultivating compassion and community spirit in the process. Recognising the importance of maintaining both mental and physical well-being, the program also included recreational events such as Ar-Riyadah Fi Ramadan: Santai Pagi, which offered board game tournaments, and Spiritual Canvas: Ramadan Poster Quest, a Ramadan-themed poster-making competition. These activities provided students with a refreshing break from academic stresses while celebrating their talents and interests in a way that complemented the month’s spiritual atmosphere. The Ramadan Fi Qalbi: “The Touch of Bless” program successfully provided a comprehensive platform for students to immerse themselves in religious learning, community engagement, and cultural exchange throughout Ramadan. By combining faith-based competitions, cross-cultural webinars, and recreational activities, this initiative fostered a deeply fulfilling Ramadan experience for the IIUM Pagoh community. The program’s holistic approach enabled students to grow spiritually, build lasting bonds, and express their creativity, leaving a positive, memorable impact on all participants involved.

Together We Care: Clean for Green – Uniting Students in Environmental Responsibility and Community Service

By : Wani Wardiah In an inspiring initiative called “Together We Care: Clean for Green,” students from IIUM Pagoh and UTHM Pagoh are joining forces every Saturday from December 9, 2023, to January 27, 2024, to promote environmental responsibility and strengthen campus community ties. Led by the Corporate Social Responsibility Bureau of the Mahallah Representative Committee (MRC) at Mahallah Zaid bin Harithah, this program is more than a routine cleanup—it’s a commitment to sustainable practices and a deeper appreciation for the shared spaces that students call home. The “Together We Care” initiative specifically focuses on cleaning and maintaining the parking areas around both universities’ hostels. Each weekend, students from both institutions come together to tidy these shared spaces, creating a cleaner, more welcoming environment for all. The initiative aims to address three key goals: fostering sustainable and eco-friendly practices, improving the overall campus atmosphere, and building a sense of collaboration and unity between students from IIUM and UTHM. By working towards these objectives, students transform ordinary volunteer tasks into meaningful contributions that reflect a larger commitment to environmental stewardship and communal harmony. What makes this initiative particularly impactful is its alignment with the values and mission of IIUM, which emphasizes Integration, Islamization, Internationalization, and Comprehensive Excellence. Through the “Together We Care” program, students apply these values to everyday activities, integrating a sense of ethical responsibility into environmental work. The initiative also reflects key principles of Maqasid Shariah, such as the preservation of life and intellect, by encouraging students to create a safer and healthier environment. Furthermore, the project supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Good Health and Well-being, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Partnerships for the Goals. In line with these global standards, the program emphasizes the importance of shared responsibility, collaboration, and community care as essential parts of sustainable development.
