Mahallah Zaid Harithah Makes History: First National E-sports Showdown for University Elite

By: Aisyah Sofiah Jafri PAGOH: On a significant occasion that sparked esports enthusiasts, Mahallah Zaid Harithah proudly hosted the first “Mahallah Premier e-League: Epic Battles, Glory Awaits.” This exciting tournament took place from 15th until 23rd December 2023, at the Convention Hall, Shared Facilities, Pagoh, bringing together 115 talented participants from renowned institutions like International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Institut Kemahiran Tinggi Belia Negara (IKTBN), and Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail (PTSN). Organized by the Sports and Recreation Bureau of MRC 23/24, this national-level e-sports event featured intense competitions in popular games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB), Pro Evolution Soccer Mobile (PES), and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG). Collaborating with Moonton Student Leader (MSL), one of the tournament’s highlights was the sponsorship from MSL, offering rewards for the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) winners to add an extra layer of excitement and prestige to the competition. Understanding IIUM’s mission in incorporating the sustainable development goals (SDGs) within the community, this tournament aimed to promote gender equality by reserving spots for female participants, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 5. Even though PUBG received a positive response, initiatives are underway to get more women to explore the exciting world of e-sports. As part of SDG 3, the event also provided an opportunity for students to unwind and recharge despite their busy schedules, highlighting the value of leisure and mental health during the university experience. The event began with an online phase for MLBB, serving as a grouping session over a week. The grand finals showcased thrilling matches not only for the semi-finals of MLBB but also for PUBG and PES – games that did not require the initial team grouping phase. The grand finale and closing ceremony, attended by esteemed guests Br. Ainul Harith, president of MRC 23/24, Sir Mohd Ton, and Miss Nurul Syafiqah, fellows of Mahallah Zaid Harithah proceeded smoothly, reflecting the dedication of the organizers. These events marked the peak of the tournament, providing a memorable and polished conclusion to the esports event. All winners were honored with e-certificates and medals, recognizing their exceptional skills and sportsmanship throughout the competition. Additionally, MLBB players were specially awarded diamonds and cash prizes from MSL, enhancing the excitement of their victory. Izzul Azzany, the program manager, in his speech during the closing ceremony, highlighted the importance of the event, stating that esports often do not receive as much recognition as physical sports at Eduhub Pagoh. He expressed that the warm welcome for the first-time hosting of the tournament signifies a positive step for the committees. He also shared his hopes for the future, stating, “I hope that the upcoming tenure will improve this branding program and collect more participation from Eduhub Pagoh students to elevate esports through this Mahallah Professional e-League program.” Therefore, the Mahallah Premier e-League didn’t just focus on competition; it also encouraged friendships, skill enhancement, and a shared enthusiasm for e-sports among university students. This program not only celebrated the competitive spirit but also prioritized the well-being and health of the students. Thus, it set the stage for future tournaments and milestones in the world of competitivegaming.
