AIKOL PROVIDES TRAINING ON EXPERT WITNESS TESTIMONY TO MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS

Kuala Lumpur, 30 March 2022. Lecturers from Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) delivered practical course to medical professional and was organised by SASMEC (IIUM), University of Malaya and Hospital Miri (Ministry of Health). It was held via Zoom online meetings on 29 and 30 March 2022. The purpose of the mock trial course is to expose medical practitioners to the role of expert witnesses in the criminal trial. The course was well-attended, with almost 100 medical professionals in attendance, including medical officers, forensic pathologists, and medical experts from both public and private sectors.

 

There are 4 lecturers from the Legal Practise Department, IIUM (Gombak) were entrusted to be the Course Trainers for the programme.

 

  1. Two talks delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr Zulfakar Ramlee and Asst. Prof. Dr Zuraini Ab Hamid
  2. Two mock trials presented by:
  • Prof. Dr Zuraini Ab Hamid
  • Prof. Dr Shukriah Sheriff
  • Mr Ibrahim Ismail

Two medical practitioners assisted with the simulated presentation, with the latter acting as expert witnesses. The attendees were exposed to how to deliver expert testimony in court, the procedures involved, and issues associated with it during the session. The course received positive reviews, with over 80% of participants giving the trainers and organisers full marks (5/5). The organising committees got numerous requests from attendees to host similar events in the future, covering a variety of medical expertise.
