Brief Introduction 

Medical imaging is concerned with diagnostic and interventional procedures, health surveillance screening and research. Diagnostic radiographers are responsible for providing safe, rapid and accurate diagnostic imaging examinations in a wide range of clinical situations, using a range of imaging modalities and techniques. This will contribute to the subsequent management of the patients. They are also responsible for the physical and psychological well-being of patients whilst in their care. Medical imaging encompasses several sub-specialties, notably computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound including Doppler imaging, nuclear medicine and interventional practice. IIUM’s Medical Imaging Bachelor degree program aims to support the national aspirations of providing quality healthcare by producing professionally competent medical imaging practitioners whom incorporate the highest Islamic values in their conduct and practice.

Program Outcome

To produce graduates with the following outcomes:

  5. Communicate effectively in verbal, non-verbal and written forms with patients, their family/ caregivers, peers, healthcare professionals, members of the general public and stakeholders.
  6. Contribute effectively as a member of the healthcare team to benefit patient management and the overall healthcare services.
  7. Demonstrate leadership skills to expand the scope of professional advancement in the workplace and community.
  8. Display clinical reasoning, reflective skills, and critical thinking for solving problem effectively.
  9. Participate in lifelong learning activities, continuous professional development and involvement in research.
  10. Apply relevant managerial and entrepreneurship skills.
  11. Harmonise Islamic perspective to Medical imaging theory and practice holistically.
Career Opportunities
  1. The degree holders of Bachelor of Medical Imaging work as a Radiographers in Hospitals, (Public and Private), Healthcare Institutions/Centres.  
  2. A graduate may also work as an Academician/Researcher in an educational or research institute.
  3. Industries offer jobs to graduates as Medical Venders and Application Specialists.   
  4. In other organisations not associated with Medical Imaging, such as, Business, Marketing, Banking, etc.
Program Structure

The existing Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) program comprises of 140 – 142 credits hours. Students are required to take 24 credit hours for the university required courses, 16 credit hours for the Kulliyyah required courses and 100 – 102 credit hours for the department courses. From that 100 – 102 credit hours, 28 credit hours or equivalent to 1120 student learning time are allocated for clinical practices and industrial placement. Students are required to fulfill these hours in clinical in order for them to graduate.

Duration of Study

The course takes four years (8 semesters) of full-time study to complete.
