Brief Introduction
Audiology is the study of normal and disordered hearing and balance as both scientific and clinical profession. In the clinical profession, audiologists perform various types of assessment in order to diagnose any hearing or balance disorders. In addition to diagnosis of hearing and balance disorders, audiologists are also involved in preparing and performing individualised rehabilitation programmes to individuals with hearing and / or balance disorders. Sub-specialisation in Audiology include: Clinical Audiology, Educational Audiology, Paediatric Audiology, Dispensing Audiology, and Industrial/ Military Audiology. IIUM’s Bachelor in Audiology degree program aims to develop future audiologists in order to fulfil the needs of the Malaysian and global health care industry.
Program Outcome
To produce graduates with the following outcomes:
- Demonstrate elemental and advanced knowledge in audiological sciences;
- Integrate their theoretical knowledge and clinical practice in the management of hearing, balance and related disorders;
- Competently perform audiological examination and evaluations using evidence based practice;
- Accurately diagnose hearing loss and/or related disorders based on the findings from the case history, clinical observation and audiological evaluation;
- Devise and execute a management plan consistent with the patients and / or caregivers‘ needs;
- Inculcate Islamic values and ethics in their practice;
- Organize and manage hearing awareness and screening programmes;
- Conduct research related to audiology under close supervision;
- Effectively cooperate with colleagues and other professionals in ensuring provision of optimal hearing health care and creating a conducive working environment;
- Utilise ICT for clinical or research purposes;
- Identify current developments in audiology through continuous education.
Career Opportunities
Among the prospective jobs for graduates are:
- Clinical audiologist – Public and private hospitals and rehabilitation centres.
- Dispensing audiologist – Hearing aid dispensing centres.
- Educational audiologist – Hearing care equipment specialist or in special needs schools.
Program Structure
IIUM’s Bachelor in Audiology degree program aims to develop future audiologists in order to fulfil the needs of the Malaysian and global health care industry. This programme is designed to prepare undergraduates for professional and research career in the profession of Audiology by incorporating the highest Islamic values in teaching and learning activities. It is a 4-year programme comprising of:
- Year 1 & 2 : Pre-Clinical
- Year 3 : Clinical
- Year 4 : Clinical and Dissertation.
Duration of Study
The course takes four years [8 long semesters (14 weeks) and 1 short semester (7 weeks) ] of full-time study to complete.
