Brief Introduction 

Biomedical science is the study of organ systems of the human body at the molecular, cellular and whole body levels that is highly relevant to the understanding and treatment of human diseases. The rapidly evolving multidisciplinary nature of biomedical science requires biomedical scientists to have a deep understanding of medical biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, cell and molecular biology, anatomy, physiology, infectious diseases and neuroscience. The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) in IIUM aims to produce professionals who are competent in scientific and experimental skills for the advancement of research and development in the biomedical field of science and health services, incorporating the Islamic values in their conduct and practice.

Program Outcome

To produce graduates with the following outcomes:

  1. Apply multidisciplinary knowledge of the biomedical sciences.
  2. Demonstrate practical skills in performing biomedical laboratory investigations and analyses of findings.
  3. Engage with the community through quality biomedical-related services in a socially responsible manner.
  4. Demonstrate ethical and legal proficiency and professionalism in everyday life and engagement.
  5. Communicate effectively either in the position at the helm or as a team member in any pursuits or undertakings.
  6. Provide creative solutions to problems in the field of biomedical sciences and reasoning in the interpretation of scientific data.
  7. Utilise ICT and information management systems to strategise and implement lifelong self-improvement.
  8. Recognise and make capital of opportunities for business and entrepreneurial ventures and employ related management skills.
  9. Integrate Islamic principles and world view in the evaluation of theories, ideas and related moral issues in the biomedical sciences.
Career Opportunities

The demand for graduates in science areas is high. Investigation and diagnosis of the diseases, health management, medical therapy procedure production and analysis on the effect of pollution to human depend so much on the laboratory tests and investigations. Hence, Biomedical Sciences graduates are expected to be employed as researcher or scientist, science officer, research officer, underwriter, and academic staff, respectively at the government hospitals, public health laboratory, private pathology laboratory, public research institutions, and health-related industry as well as at the public or private higher education institutes.

Program Structure

In order to obtain the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) from IIUM, a student must successfully complete 142 Credit Hours (CH) of course work consisting of the university, Kulliyyah and department requirements, as shown in Attachment A.

Duration of Study

The duration of studies will be a minimum of eight (8) semesters which is equivalent to four (4) years (normal duration) and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters which is equivalent to six (6) years (normal duration).
