AIKOL WELCOMES CBAS DELEGATION TO STRENGTHEN COOPERATION ON LAW, TECHNOLOGY, AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Gombak, 29 August 2025 – The Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), received a delegation from the Beijing-based International Research Centre of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) in a meeting that marked a significant step toward fostering collaboration between law and technology.

The visit by CBAS on 27 August was described as the most deeply integrated exchange of their mission to Malaysia, with discussions focusing on legal and technological cooperation to empower space-based sustainable development.

Led by Prof. Dr. Ida Madieha Abdul Ghani Azmi, Dean of AIKOL, together with senior faculty members, the meeting highlighted five key cooperation areas, including construction of cybersecurity systems in space, legal coordination for cross-border big data sharing, compliance recommendations for emerging technologies, intellectual property protection frameworks and education and awareness on cybersecurity and sustainable digital governance

CBAS expressed deep appreciation for AIKOL’s professional legal insights, noting that the expertise shared by Prof. Dr. Ida Madieha and her team has provided valuable legal safeguards to support the Digital Sustainable Development Programme (DSP). The alignment of AIKOL’s legal perspectives with CBAS’s technological vision paved the way for future joint initiatives, particularly in Malaysia and the wider ASEAN region.

The delegates from CBAS Beijing who attended the meeting were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dou Changyong – Director of SDGSAT Satellite & Data Processing Division, CBAS Beijing, Dr. Arthur Xiang – Principal Investigator, SDGSAT Satellite & Data Processing Division, CBAS Beijing and Mdm Sue Kamal – Representative of CBAS in Malaysia & Executive Chairman, SKT Global (M).

Both Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dou Changyong and Dr. Arthur Xiang are China’s national space and satellite scientists who hold diplomatic status passports for official meetings in Malaysia and abroad.

Both parties also explored AIKOL’s potential role in the SDG Langkawi Space Science City initiative, with CBAS highlighting AIKOL and IIUM as pioneering partners in promoting inclusivity, sustainability, and cross-border data governance.

In their note of appreciation, CBAS invited AIKOL to visit its headquarters in Beijing to further strengthen cooperation. The collaboration aims to establish a sustainable model of partnership where law and technology complement one another to achieve global sustainable development goals.

The meeting reaffirmed AIKOL’s position as a thought leader in legal frameworks for digital innovation, while reinforcing Malaysia’s role in driving ASEAN’s sustainable and inclusive growth through law, policy, and technology.
