Gombak, 13 October 2022. The IIUM Climate Change Policy and Law Centre (CCPL Centre) together with Harun M. Hashim Law Centre, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, with the support of the HEAD Foundation organise the Round Table Discussion on Climate Change, Tourism and Community Engagement.
In his welcoming remarks, Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib, who is also a member of CCPL Centre, highlights the failure of some sections of the society to see the urgency of climate change since most of the impacts, even though grave, are incremental. The direct experience of Malaysian of the impact of extreme weather in the preceding years in the form of unexpected floods have increased the awareness of climate change.
The guest speaker, Mr Veng Serevyvuth, the Chairman of Pannasatra University, shares his life in the rural Cambodia interacting and living sustainably with nature. Although the world has been impacted adversely by climate change, Mr Veng Serevyvuth is convinced that human by nature are good and will be able to transform themselves and the surrounding to be better.
Assoc Prof Dr Maizatun Mustafa, the Director of the IIUM CCPL Centre, underlines multi-direction of consequences between tourism and climate change where tourism may have negative impacts on the climate. Similarly, climate change also may adversely impact tourism.
Dato’ Hamidon Abdul Hamid, the Director of the IIUM Centre for Islamization (CENTRIS), shares his experience in leading student community engagement works in Cambodia. The community engagements expose to participants of the life of the less privileged communities and instil upon the participants the necessity of actions to uplift the community and to consider the environment that dictates the life of all communities.
Among those in attendance are Dr Wan Chang Da, the CEO of the HEAD Foundation, Bro Muhaideen Abdul Kader Mohamad Ikbal from IIUM Sejahtera Centre for Sustainability and Humanity, Dr Nur Hidayah Abd Rahman, the Head of Department of Tourism, Kulliyyah of Languages and Management and several students from Cambodia who are studying in IIUM.
