IIUM HOSTS ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION ON JUDICIAL INDEPENDENCE: BALANCING TRADITION AND TRANSFORMATION

GOMBAK, 31 December 2025 – The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), through the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), successfully convened a Round Table Discussion entitled “Between Tradition and Transformation: Judicial Independence” at the Level 2 Administrative Meeting Room, AIKOL. The event was conducted in a hybrid format, with participation both on-site and via Google Meet, providing an inclusive platform for scholarly engagement on the evolving nature of judicial independence.

The programme featured distinguished academic experts who offered comparative perspectives on the foundations and challenges of judicial autonomy. The discussion was structured into two main segments, beginning with an Islamic perspective delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Badruddin Hj Ibrahim of the Islamic Law Department, AIKOL. His presentation, “Judicial Independence: An Islamic Viewpoint,” examined how classical Shariʿah principles conceptualise and safeguard the independence of the judiciary.

The second segment focused on an international case study, presented by Dr. Ahmed Maajid, Senior Lecturer at Zikyra International College, Maldives. His session, “Judicial Independence in the Maldives,” provided an overview of the Maldivian legal system and highlighted contemporary challenges confronting judicial independence within that jurisdiction.

The discussion was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr. Shamrahayu Ab Aziz of the Islamic Law Department, AIKOL, whose facilitation enabled a meaningful exchange between theoretical foundations and the practical realities of legal transformation in the twenty-first century.

The programme concluded with an interactive dialogue between the speakers and participants, both in person and online. This Round Table Discussion reflects IIUM’s continued commitment to promoting rigorous academic discourse and providing a platform for critical examination of legal issues from both local and global perspectives.
