Gombak, 22 September 2022. Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws (AIKOL) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Fakultas Hukum, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), jointly organise the International Conference on Maritime Security in Southeast Asia. The theme of the conference is “Countering Maritime Security Threats of the 21st Century with a Concerted Action of Southeast Asian Nations”.
Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib, the Dean of AIKOL, in delivering the opening remarks welcomes all invited guests, keynote speakers and participants to the inaugural joint conference with Fakultas Hukum, UGM. He emphasises the important issues surrounding maritime security in the Southeast Asia which include the overlapping maritime boundary claims, illegal and irregular fishing, and maritime traffic in the Malay Archipelago. He hails the vision of the Rectors from both universities that share the importance of collaboration between both universities particularly in matters of shared interest such as the maritime security.
Prof Farid Sufian Shuaib also shares that in recognising the importance of related issues, AIKOL establishes the International Law and Maritime Affairs Research Unit (ILMA)(Research Clusters – Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah Of Laws (iium.edu.my), Office of the Tun Mahathir PGPF Chair for Global Peace, and the Climate Change Policy and Law Centre (CLPLC).
The message from Dr. Dahliana Hasan, Dean of Facultas Hukum, UGM, in her welcoming address resonates with the content of her counterpart from AIKOL. Dr Dahliana Hasan strongly supports intense deliberation in contributing to the resolution of ongoing maritime security issues in the Malay Archipelago
Professor Dr. Ova Emilia, the Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia welcomes the collaboration with IIUM. According to her, maritime security is very critical for the peace and development of the Southeast Asia which ASEAN should be able to contribute in the peaceful resolution of the issue.
Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Bin Abdul Razak, the Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia in welcoming and officiating the conference weights on the reality of the political, economic and social intricacies relating to maritime security issues in Southeast Asia. He also attracts attention of the conference to the issue of regular and irregular movement of people including of economic migrants and refugees. The peaceful resolution of any issues is essential for sustainable development of the region.
Professor Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Bin Abdul Razak welcomes the collaboration with Universitas Gadjah Mada in having a discourse on matters of immediate concern for everybody in the region.
