In a remarkable initiative aimed at fostering community upliftment, Flagship 3.0: CBFA hosted the transformative “Kitchen First Aid” event at PDK Kompleks Penyayang. This unique gathering brought together members of the Kulliyyah of Nursing and Kulliyyah of Dentistry communities, all dedicated members of Flagship 3.0: CBFA. Led by the committed Project Leader, Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, supported by Dr. Haliza Hasan, the event unfolded as a seamless blend of culinary collaboration and essential first aid education, which includes all parts of the community, without exclusion, including those with special needs.

The event kicked off with a collective culinary experience, where a total of 39 participants from the PDK Kompleks Penyayang with 32 special needs members of PDK Kompleks Penyayang, and seven (7) caregivers/teachers and CBFA members joined forces to prepare a delightful meal. Mee Soup, refreshing Lemonade, accompanied by cakes and fruits, adorned the menu, creating not just a meal but a shared experience that resonated with unity and togetherness.

Following the satisfying feast, the gathering transitioned into a session of educational upliftment led by Dr. Nurul’Ain and the CBFA team. Practical insights into “Kitchen First Aid” were shared, covering a range of topics from arm sling applications to bandaging techniques and addressing bleeding using readily accessible materials within their reach at the facility. What made this session particularly impactful was the active participation of the attendees who had the chance to perform hands-on demonstrations, enhancing their first aid skills.

Beyond the educational aspect, Flagship 3.0: CBFA took a commendable step by presenting essential First Aid equipment and a Visual Aid Banner on Kitchen First Aid to PDK Kompleks Penyayang. These contributions serve as lasting resources for the institution, supporting their ongoing efforts in community care. The “Kitchen First Aid” event exemplified Flagship 3.0: CBFA’s commitment to creating positive change in the lives of the communities they serve. By combining practical skills, shared experiences, and community contributions, the event left a lasting impact, fostering a sense of unity and upliftment.

Nurturing Future Leaders: Kem Remaja Intelek Empowers Teens with Islamic Knowledge

Date: November 11, 2023

by Muhammad Farhan Mahmud & Dr. Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Ismail

Location: Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM

The Islamisation of Human Knowledge (IOHK), Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, recently hosted a transformative event known as “Kem Remaja Intelek” at the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM Kuantan. This enlightening initiative brought together teenagers aged 12 to 18 years old with the noble objective of fostering a profound understanding of Islam, aiming to shape them into future leaders and Khalifahs of the Ummah.

The event, held in the nurturing environment of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, provided a platform for teens to delve into the teachings of Islam and develop a strong connection of faith. Guided by the principles of the al-Quran and the profound wisdom of Prophet Muhammad, the Kem Remaja Intelek aimed to empower teenagers with the knowledge and values that would enable them to become exemplary leaders in the future. One of the foundational principles for this initiative is rooted in the Hadith where Prophet Muhammad PBUH emphasized the importance of nurturing the younger generation. The Prophet PBUH said:

“A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in both. Adhere to whatever brings you benefit, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If something befalls you, do not say: ‘Had I done such-and-such, it would be such-and-such.’ Indeed, the word ‘if’ opens the way before the devil to act.” Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (Sahih Muslim)

This hadith underscores the importance of instilling resilience, faith, and a sense of purpose in the youth, aligning with the objectives of this camp. By providing a space for intellectual growth and spiritual development, the event aspires to mold the youth into responsible and informed Khalifah, poised to lead the Ummah with wisdom and integrity. One of the foundational principles for this initiative is rooted in Surah Al-Imran (3:110):

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah . If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.”

This verse emphasizes the responsibility of believers to exemplify righteousness, promote goodness, and stand against injustice. It serves as a guiding principle for Kem Remaja Intelek, inspiring teenagers to embody the values of a model community. The event seeks to instill the values of knowledge, compassion, and leadership in teenagers, aligning with the teachings of the al-Quran. By providing a space for intellectual growth and spiritual development, the event aspires to mold the youth into responsible and informed Khalifahs, poised to lead the Ummah with wisdom and integrity.

As we invest in the education and empowerment of our teenagers today, we contribute to building a brighter and more enlightened future for the entire Ummah. This camp stands as a testament to the commitment of IOHK and the Kulliyyah of Nursing in nurturing the next generation of leaders who will carry the torch of Islamic knowledge and principles forward.

Flagship 3.0 CBFA in Pacific Partnership Exercise (PPE) 2023 collaboration

Date: September 6, 2023

by Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin & Muhammad Farhan Mahmud

Location: SMK Sultan Abu Bakar & SMK Paya Besar, Kuantan, Pahang

In collaboration with PPE 2023, the Community-based First Aid (CBFA) flagship team of Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, is honoured to share our knowledge and skills on first aid with two schools in Kuantan: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Paya Besar and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Abu Bakar. The team was divided into two, with about 60 school pupils from each school involved in the session.

Besides first aid, the school pupils were also taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and ‘stop the bleed’. These are important skills and techniques that can save lives in emergencies. First aid is the initial care provided to a person who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before professional medical help arrives. It aims to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. Meanwhile, CPR is a life-saving technique used when the heartbeat or breathing have stopped. It consists of chest compressions and rescue breaths to circulate oxygen-rich blood to vital organs until professional medical help arrives.

A new basic life-saving technique was introduced during this exercise, Stop the Bleed. It is a national campaign in the United States and is now being introduced worldwide, aimed at teaching people how to control severe bleeding, which can occur in accidents or mass casualty events. It emphasises rapid response to stop life-threatening bleeding using basic techniques and tools.

These are essential skills to have in case of an emergency, and taking courses to become certified in first aid, CPR, and Stop the Bleed is highly recommended. Many organisations, such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross, offer training programs in these life-saving techniques. Being prepared and knowing how to respond in an emergency can make a significant difference in saving lives and minimising the impact of injuries.

Poster Exhibition at the 13th Global RCE (Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development) Conference

Date: October 31, 2023

by Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin & Muhammad Farhan Mahmud

Location: IIUM Cultural Centre, IIUM Gombak, Selangor

The conference, which was held in hybrid mode, was hosted by RCE Greater Gombak and RCE Kuala Lumpur under the theme ‘Whole Community Approach for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)’. The flagship teams of the university have been invited to join the poster exhibition during the conference. The poster exhibition likely showcased various initiatives and community services related to sustainable development. This activity can lead to potential partnerships and shared projects.

The CBFA flagship took the opportunity to showcase our mission and the activities carried out for the attendees of the conference, including our renowned rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak. It was a great moment to have the Rector visit the CBFA poster exhibition booth during the conference. We had the chance to explain the necessity of knowing about first aid and to explore a variety of educational and research initiatives related to sustainable development, which can be beneficial. The rector’s visit allows for knowledge sharing and potentially identifying opportunities for collaboration or learning from best practises.

Overall, the poster exhibition during the 13th Global RCE Conference underscores the institution’s commitment to sustainable development and highlights the importance of knowledge exchange and collaboration in the critical field of educating communities about their substantial needs.
