🌱 Compost With Us: A Journey of Sustainability and Growth – Phase 4 Highlights 🌱

On the 30th of March, our passionate community came together at the IIUM Kuantan Campus for an inspiring evening dedicated to sustainability, growth, and the spirit of Ramadan. “Compost With Us” reached a new milestone in its journey towards promoting eco-friendly practices and social entrepreneurship. Here’s a snapshot of our enriching Saturday:

📢 Opening Remark:

Our program manager kicked off the event with insightful words on the critical role of composting in our environment and its potential as a sustainable business model.

🌿 Hands-On Learning:
Sowing Seeds with Compost: Participants dived into the world of composting, learning to sow seeds using a food waste compost medium. Transplanting Seedlings: A step further into gardening, showcasing how to transplant seedlings into a nourishing, compost-rich medium. Flourishing Flowers: Our community learned the art of fertilizing flowering plants with our specially prepared food waste compost.

📦 From Waste to Wealth:
The evening also saw our enthusiasts packaging compost for marketing, turning what was once waste into valuable, eco-friendly products.

🍽 A Shared Meal:
As the sun set, we gathered to break our fast together, sharing iftar packs in a moment of community and reflection.

This event wasn’t just about composting; it was a testament to what we can achieve together for our planet and future generations. A big thank you to everyone who joined us in making Phase 4 a success! 🌎💚

Postgraduate Workshop: Speed-Up Your Masters Journey

In a concerted effort to enhance the academic journey of postgraduate students, Dr. Haliza Hasan and Dr. Noor Azizah Mohd Ali spearheaded a special workshop titled “Postgraduate Workshop: Speed Up Your Master Journey.” This dynamic event took place on the 27th and 28th of February 2024 at the Conference Room, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. The workshop was meticulously crafted to address key facets crucial to the progress of the participating students.

Central to the workshop’s agenda was the provision for current progress updates from all students. This facilitated an insightful overview of each student’s trajectory, enabling both supervisors and peers to offer targeted guidance and support. Moreover, the workshop served as a platform for invaluable supervisory consultations, fostering meaningful interactions between students and their main and co-supervisors. Through these consultations, students received personalized feedback and direction tailored to their specific academic endeavors.

An equally significant emphasis was placed on nurturing a culture of peer group support. Recognizing the importance of collaboration and camaraderie in academic pursuits, the workshop endeavored to encourage mutual assistance and knowledge exchange among participants. By fostering a supportive peer network, students were empowered to navigate challenges collectively and leverage each other’s strengths.

The roster of participants comprised esteemed individuals committed to advancing their scholarly pursuits: Sr. Norhariyanti Shahari, Sr. Shahiera Naziera Othman, Sr. Roszarita Zainal Abidin, Sr. Nurazura Mamat, and Sr. Nurul Natasya Zulkifli. Their active involvement and enthusiastic engagement epitomized the spirit of collaboration and dedication that underscored the workshop’s objectives.

In essence, the Postgraduate Workshop: Speed Up Your Master Journey served as a beacon of academic enrichment, providing students with the requisite tools, resources, and support systems to navigate their master’s journey with confidence and efficacy. Under the mentorship of Dr. Haliza Hasan and Dr. Noor Azizah Mohd Ali, it is poised to catalyze significant strides in the academic and professional development of its participants, propelling them towards excellence and scholarly achievement.

PFA-S

Project Description
The School Counsellors’ Psychological First Aid for school (PFA- S) is a program that aims to improve school counsellors’ mental health knowledge and literacy via prevention, early intervention among children & adolescents following the COVID-19 pandemic. Psychological First Aid for Schools (PFA-S) is an evidence-informed intervention model to assist students, staff, and families in the immediate aftermath of an emergency and can be used by any trained staff member or community partner. Trauma-related distress can have a long-term impact. PFA-S uses brief interventions to produce positive results that last. Previous studies suggested that teachers (including school counsellors) should have greater awareness regarding depression among adolescents for early detection.

SMILE PROJECT

Introduction

The SMILE Project was implemented in three secondary schools in Pekan, Pahang, from November 2023 to October 2025 with the aim of improving mental health literacy among students, parents, and school communities. It sought to promote awareness, encourage early detection, and establish support systems for adolescents, recognising that schools are uniquely positioned to address psychosocial needs alongside academic achievement. Over two years, the project has shown that school-based mental health promotion is not only feasible but also impactful, achieving and in several areas exceeding its intended targets.

Phase I

The project began with a preparation phase that focused on building the capacity of school counsellors, who are the front-liners in addressing psychosocial concerns. Eight counsellors from the three schools participated in training based on modules adapted from WHO recommendations, covering the introduction, assessment, and management of child and adolescent mental and behavioural disorders. Counsellors reported significant improvements in knowledge and skills, particularly in recognising early signs of distress and applying practical intervention strategies. Strengthening their capacity ensured that schools had a more effective internal system to respond to students’ mental health needs.

Phase II

Recognising the influence of peers in adolescent life, the next phase engaged 30 student leaders, recruited in collaboration with school counsellors and trained as SMILE Ambassadors. Through interactive workshops that included role plays, discussions, and scenario-based activities, they learned to recognise warning signs, practise active listening, provide basic support, and refer peers to counsellors when necessary. The ambassadors later implemented peer-led initiatives, normalising conversations around mental health and serving as role models for their classmates. These activities demonstrated that empowering students themselves can create lasting cultural change in schools.

Phase III

To reinforce these efforts, a SMILE Room was established in each school as a safe and comfortable space where students could relax, access resources, or seek confidential support from counsellors. The rooms symbolised the schools’ commitment to student well-being and provided a physical hub for activities. In some schools, the initiative extended beyond the rooms. At SMK Dato’ Mahmud Mat (DMASS), teachers displayed four posters and signage with mental health messages around the school compound, strengthening the visibility of the project and normalised discussions about mental health across the wider school community, showing genuine ownership and sustainability.

Phase IV

Screening and targeted intervention represented another critical step. Using the validated DASS-21 tool, 886 students completed the screening, achieving a 98.4% response rate against the target of 900. Students were categorised into five groups: normal, mild, moderate, severe, and extremely severe, allowing tailored responses. Those in the normal and mild range were encouraged to continue using the SMILE Rooms and peer networks, while students in the moderate categories received individual and group counselling sessions by clinical psychologist, focusing on stress management and resilience. Students identified as severe or extremely severe were referred to psychiatrists within the project’s network, with referrals coordinated through counsellors and parents to ensure confidentiality and follow-up. This systematic approach ensured that all students received support appropriate to their level of need.

Phase V

Parents of at-risk students were also engaged through interactive counselling sessions. Recruitment presented challenges, particularly at SMATAF where only six parents joined due to work commitments, health concerns, and scheduling conflicts. Nevertheless, the project exceeded its overall target by engaging 32 parents across all schools. Sessions were scheduled flexibly including during lunch breaks, evenings, and weekends, and offered both online and face-to-face. Each two-hour session was facilitated by mental health experts and supported with resources, including the booklet “Tenang Bersama Remaja.” Parents reported improved awareness of mental health, greater confidence in supporting their children, and stronger communication at home.

SYOKNYA DAKWAH

Project Description
Alhamdulillah, on February 3, 2024, Saturday, the Islamic NGOs Coalition of Pahang, together with the Islamization of Human Knowledge (IOHK) Kulliyyah of Nursing, Majlis Ugama Islam dan Adat Resam Melayu Pahang (MUIP), and the Jabatan Agama Islam, organized a special THEORY & PRACTICAL program for the people of Pahang! Only ONE DAY! 
The program, which brings together influential figures in Islamic preaching with extensive experience in the field, such as Ust. Mohd Fadzli bin Mat Saman, Deputy Director of the Preaching Division of JAIP, who has been preaching in the Orang Asli community for over 20 years, and Al-Fadhil Tuan Qadhi Ustaz Mohd Zainudin Bin Zakaria, who is also an Imam of a mosque well-known in the world of preaching among both Muslim and non-Muslim communities.

SUNATHON 2024

Project Description
The KON community played a crucial role in the success of Sunathon 2024 (Khatan Perdana in Paya Besar) held on 17th February 2024. This event was a collaborative effort organized by the Majlis Ugama Islam dan Adat Resam Melayu Pahang (MUIP), Al-Itqan Care, and Masjid Sultan Ahmad Shah, Bukit Goh, in partnership with the Islamisation of Human Knowledge (IOHK), Kulliyyah of Nursing. Our 2nd Year Nursing students, Sr. Nur Iffah Hannaa and Sr. Nasratul Hamizan, alongside our respected Staff Nurse/CI Sr. Normazatul Afieda and Dr. Mohamad Firdaus, were instrumental in driving this noble initiative. Alhamdulillah, through their dedicated efforts, a total of 66 participants underwent successful circumcision.

PROGRAM KESIHATAN MINDA KOMUNITI

Project Description
The Program Kesihatan Minda Komuniti sponsored by the Hasanah Foundation in collaboration with the Balok Community Health Centre was successfully held on 23/2/2024 (Friday) at the Balok Public Hall. The program was led by Dr. Sharifah Munirah Syed Elias along with team members Associate Professor Dr. Siti Roshaidai Mohd Arifin. Also in attendance was Mr. Koh Xiu Heng representing the Hasanah Foundation, Mr. Mansor Mokhtar as the head of the Balok Community Health Centre, Mr. Razak Osman from the Seberang Balok Community Health Centre, and Prof. Dr. Ramli Musa as the invited panelist. The program was attended by nearly 100 participants comprising residents of Kg Balok. Also present were 20 volunteers consisting of registered volunteers with the Social Welfare Department and village residents.

IIUM Students Shine in Sakura Science Exchange Program

Nine students from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) recently participated in the esteemed Sakura Science Exchange Student Program, generously sponsored by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). Organized collaboratively by the College of Nursing and Art Science at the University of Hyogo, Japan, and IIUM Malaysia, the program aimed to foster academic and cultural exchange between the two nations. Accompanying the students was Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Kamil bin Che Hasan, the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing.

The participants, comprising a mix of PhD, master’s, and bachelor’s students from IIUM, embarked on a journey of learning and exploration from the 17th to the 22nd of February 2024. The program commenced with a warm welcome, featuring cultural exchanges such as sushi preparation, origami sessions, and insights into the traditional festival of Hina Matsuri.

Over the following days, the students engaged in a diverse range of activities aimed at enhancing their knowledge and skills. This included a two-day intensive workshop on disaster nursing and shelter management, featuring lectures and tabletop exercises. A pivotal aspect of the program was a visit to the Disaster Museum, offering an immersive experience commemorating the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. The visit included a 4D earthquake simulation, thematic exhibitions, and demonstrations on earthquake science and fast response techniques.

Further enriching their experience, the students visited the Red Cross Hospital in Kobe, where they were introduced to various units and departments, including the intensive care unit, operating theatre, and emergency department. Explorations of cultural landmarks such as Akashi Castle and Kitano Street near Kobe provided insights into the multiethnicity and diversity of Japan’s urban landscape.

Additionally, the students had the opportunity to visit the educational facilities at the College of Nursing and Art Science, University of Hyogo, gaining insights into library resources, lecture halls, and student facilities. Faculty mentor meetings tailored to their specialization areas further enhanced their learning experience.

The program also included a city tour of Kobe and Osaka, led by local students, providing the IIUM participants with a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and heritage.

In a culminating presentation session, IIUM-PhD student cum UNIMAS staff, Mohammed Rasheedan distinguished himself by winning the Best Presenter Award for his engaging presentation titled “From Kuching to Hyogo: A Memoir of Japan.” This accolade not only reflects the academic excellence of IIUM but also underscores the success of collaborative initiatives like the Sakura Science Exchange Program in fostering international understanding and cooperation.

The participation of IIUM students in this exchange program signifies Malaysia’s commitment to promoting global partnerships in education and research. As these young scholars return home enriched with new knowledge and experiences, they are poised to contribute positively to their respective fields and further strengthen the bonds between Malaysia and Japan.

Master In Nursing Exchange Programme from UMY!

Universitas Brawijaya Students Ace 5 Nursing Courses in Semester 1, 2023/2024!

Today, amidst a sense of camaraderie and achievement, the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM bid farewell with a heavy heart to our four Nursing students which also the participants of the Student Exchange Program from Universitas Brawijaya to the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. The exchange programme, which began on 4th October 2023, and lasted until 14th February 2024, concluded with a simple yet meaningful farewell ceremony marking the end of a transformative journey.

Under the guidance of Dr. Haliza Hasan from the Department of Special Care Nursing, Sr. Herdyana Lintang Sari, Sr. Laelatul Siti Nur Rohmah, Sr. Risma Dwi Rahmawati, and Br. Muhammad Andre Sugiharto immersed themselves in a rigorous academic curriculum. Throughout one semester, they diligently pursued five nursing courses offered by various departments of Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, enhancing their knowledge and skills in the field.

The farewell ceremony, chaired by Dr. Abdul Alif Abdul Hamid, the Deputy Dean of Student Development and Community Engagement (DDSDCE), highlighted their dedication and experiences for the past 5 months. Dr. Abdul Alif expressed a massive gratitude on behalf of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM and presented them with tokens of appreciation, recognizing their crucial role in fostering cross-cultural exchange and academic excellence. Beyond academic pursuits, the participants actively engaged in various events and community outreach programs organised by the universities, reflecting a commitment to collaboration and service.

As they move forward in their academic and professional journeys, the KON community extends heartfelt wishes to Sr. Herdyana Lintang Sari, Sr. Laelatul Siti Nur Rohmah, Sr. Risma Dwi Rahmawati, and Br. Muhammad Andre Sugiharto. May they carry the lessons learned and friendships formed during their time at IIUM, continuing to inspire excellence and collaboration in all their endeavors.

This effort and occasion also marks the successful conclusion of a chapter in international academic exchange, demonstrating the transformative impact of cultural immersion and scholarly collaboration.
