Lecturers and students from IIUM and UI during the closing ceremony

From 7 until 13 May 2023, the Postgraduate Student Society Kuliyyah of Nursing (PGSS KON) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan organised an exciting Mobility Outbound Programme to Faculty of Nursing Universitas Indonesia (UI). The programme featured an active involvement of 10 dedicated postgraduate students, comprising of 6 master’s and 4 PhD candidates. The programme was also enriched by the presence and guidance of esteemed lecturers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlina Bt. Daud, Deputy Dean of IIUM Kuantan Campus, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sanisah Binti Saidi, former Deputy Dean (Postgraduate and Responsible Research & Innovation) of KON, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Muzaitul Akma Mustapa Kamal Basha, the Postgraduate Coordinator of KON. This programme aimed to give students a fresh perspective on their academic journey, going beyond regular classrooms. It focused on developing personal and intellectual growth, encouraged research collaboration as well cross-cultural communication.

The journey from Kuantan to Jakarta is highly captivating as most of us are visiting Universitas Indonesia for the first time. We are elated and filled with joy to have such an opportunity as delegates from KON IIUM. Before we departed to UI, our former Deputy Dean of Postgraduate and Responsible Research & Innovation gives her briefings which include on the rules and regulations that need to be followed throughout the mobility outbound. She reminded us to always shows the good manner and attitude during the programme as well as actively participate in this programme to gain better knowledge and input from the UI.

In addition, our accompany lecturers also give the orientation and a little overview of UI as well as exposure of the cultures that was practiced by the university student in UI. This brief orientation would prevent us from getting culture shock since we were from different country. We also had an orientation between students such as meet and greet sessions to get to know each other better. The tentative of the program during mobility outbound was given early to us before departing to UI to make sure that we were fully prepared in term of time management and activities. We departed from IIUM Kuantan at 7am, heading to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and had our breakfast at R&R Genting Sempah. At 11.45am, we reached KLIA and boarded to Jakarta at 3.30pm.

Pre departure to Universitas Indonesia

We arrived Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at 6.00pm and waited for transport to continue our journey to UI, Depok. Our first impression regarding UI was unique and prestige university that we had ever visited. From an enormous library to an aesthetically built buildings, it consists of various landscape that could never be seen in Malaysia. It is well facilitated and accommodating. We were welcomed with a warmth of smiles and great pleasure from the lecturers and students itself. Upon our arrival, a postgraduate student extended a friendly greeting, setting a positive tone for the entire experience. They are very humble despite the position and title that they’re carrying. Literally a good place to gain knowledge and experience.

On the first day of May 8, 2023, a public address was delivered by students hailing from the esteemed University of Indonesia. The public lecture was presented by two lecturers from the IIUM, notably Associate Prof. Dr. Sanisah Saidi, who discussed the topic of doing research connected to religion in healthcare settings, and Associate Prof. Dr. Azlina Daud, who focused on the principles of randomized controlled trials. Furthermore, with the process of acquainting ourselves, we engaged in the exchange of perspectives regarding past and ongoing research endeavors.

During the second day, we were escorted to the University of Indonesia Hospital to do a site visit. We were provided with pertinent details regarding the hospital and thereafter escorted on a tour of other units within the healthcare facility. The ward space is now occupied by a plethora of sophisticated technology, representing a novel addition to our knowledge base. The attire worn by nurses in the hospital consists of scrub suits. The utilisation of scrub suits significantly enhances the mobility and comfort of nurses throughout their professional duties.

During the afternoon, we were escorted to a health facility located in the city of Depok. The recent acquisition of knowledge reveals a profound reverence for the utilisation of herbs in culinary, beverage, and medicinal contexts within the healthcare setting. On the subsequent day, we were escorted to the library for a tour. The culture exhibited by the students at this institution is quite commendable. The environment has a tranquil ambiance, where individuals are seen holding books, indicative of their profound reverence for knowledge. The library space offers a high level of comfort, complemented by amenities such as a cafe for dining and refreshments, as well as a souvenir shop.

Hospital visit at Rumah Sakit Universitas Indonesia (UI)

In an academic context, it is necessary to convey the initial findings of our research. This approach is implemented by the segregation of master’s and PhD students. In addition, our presentation was complemented by a presentation delivered by their students in support of the defense research proposal. The process of asking several questions enables us to acquire fresh insights and information. The academic benefits we obtained from the programme were remarkable. One notable aspect of our interaction was the campus tour, where we engaged with local students, fostering informal discussions about academic and cultural interests. A particularly memorable experience was when one student accompanied us on a tour outside the campus, creating a conducive environment for knowledge exchange. These conversations covered a range of topics, including postgraduate studies and healthcare systems, providing a platform for sharing experiences and gaining insights into each other’s educational backgrounds.

During visits to the clinic (PUSKESMAS), the presence of numerous postgraduate students from Universitas Indonesia allowed for more relaxed and open knowledge exchange. These encounters led to the exchange of contact information and social media connections, enhancing our understanding of each other. Sessions with the Student Representative Council further facilitated engaging discussions about society activities, fostering collaboration. Reflecting on our experiences, similarities between our nursing programs became evident, emphasizing a shared commitment to producing skilled healthcare professionals with a passion for nursing. However, differences emerged in program nuances influenced by unique cultural and healthcare contexts. Understanding these distinctions not only deepened our academic insights but also broadened our perspectives on nursing education and practice, leaving a lasting impact on my personal and academic growth.

There are few challenges we encountered throughout the programme. One of the issues includes the lodging offered was less conducive. As a consequence, the students had to search for and relocate to other accommodations multiple times throughout the programme due to a lack of available rooms during that period. Additionally, they had to split into two groups due to the lack of available lodging to accommodate every student at a single location. The lodging issues have a direct impact on transportation. The van driver is required to make multiple stops to collect up and drop off students at various locations, which impacts punctuality. Other than that, the time difference between Malaysia and Indonesia poses a challenge for students in adjusting and effectively managing their time, particularly during the initial stages. It also impacts the punctuality of the students throughout the program.

Overall, having a mobility program is one of the most memorable and precious experiences we have ever had. Learning about a new culture, being in a new environment and meeting new people while living and travelling in a different country has given us a more mature and a different way of seeing life. We are extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to be able to join this outbound program. In our opinion, it has always been a goal of us to be able to experience different foreign cultures throughout our academic life. Traveling is a rewarding experience that not only offers a change of scenery but also challenges and opportunities for personal growth.

This program is indeed a very good program to build an independent and outstanding student. This program should be done more often in the future as this can help our students to be more open-minded and confident to meet foreign people. Due to differences in learning cultures, we hope that we can learn understanding the method of online learning by other universities in the future. It will help us understand more about the world and think with different perspectives.

KONSTAA 2023

Date: December 16, 2023

by Sr Intan Nabila Mohd Yusri

Location: Main Auditorium, Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan, Pahang

The KONSTAA, Kulliyyah of Nursing Appreciation Award, stands as an annual celebration organized by the Education and Development Bureau Nursing Students’ Society of Kulliyyah of Nursing (NURSS). This remarkable event, which was held on September 16, 2023, in the Kulliyyah of Science Main Auditorium, marked not just a ceremony but also an important day in the academic calendar.Functioning as more than just an awards ceremony, KONSTAA represents a comprehensive approach to student development. It is an empowering occasion that encourages and recognizes people for their academic achievements as well as their general personal and professional development. Over the years, the event has transformed, demonstrating the organization’s dedication to helping Kulliyyah of Nursing students succeed.

The aims of KONSTAA extend beyond the mere acknowledgment of academic and co-curricular achievements; it strives to build successful individuals. Through a carefully manage program, it aims to instill a sense of accomplishment in the hearts of students, motivating them to progress further in their academic and non-academic pursuits. Central to the success of KONSTAA is its ability to create a platform for the bonding of lecturers, Clinical Instructors, and students. The event serves as a unique occasion for recognition, where the hard work and dedication of students of Kulliyyah of Nursing are acknowledged, creating an ukhuwah and relationship among the students, lecturers, clinical instructors and staffs of Kulliyyah of Nursing.

The well organized program is structured to appreciate students for their tremendous efforts and fulfillment of responsibilities. Moreover, it serves as a catalyst for academic and co-curricular excellence. The awards encompass various categories, including Dean List Awards for Semesters 1 and 2, Dean List for Semester 1 only, Dean List of Semester 2 only, Best Student Award, Well Nigh Award, Clinical Performance Award, Leadership Award, Sportsman and Sportswoman Award, Dashing Award, and Outstanding Award. Each award, with its unique criteria, aims to honor students who have demonstrated dedication and achievement that makes the students really deserved for the recognition of the awards. The event kicks off with the soulful possession of Nasyid Burdah by the Nasyid Team, setting the tone for the morning of celebration. For the students, it is more than an award ceremony; it feels like a pre-convocation, a moment of validation for their tireless efforts throughout their nursing journey.

The instrumental role played by Programme Advisor, Assistant Prof. Dr. Noor Azizah binti Mohd Ali, cannot be overstated. Her unwavering support from the inception to the execution of the event underscores the commitment of the faculty to the success and well-being of the students. Her dedication contributes significantly to the overall positive atmosphere of the occasion. For me as the Programme Manager KONSTAA 22/23, despite the challenging process of organizing such a remarkable event, every tear shed during the journey is worth the effort. Success is not attributed to the leadership of one individual but is a collective achievement resulting from the strong bonds forged among the organizing committee members. As students express their satisfaction, it is evident that KONSTAA has not only raised the standard but has also validated the struggles faced by students.

The hope is that the momentum generated by KONSTAA 22/23 continues to reverberate, inspiring future appreciation award events. The commitment to recognizing, motivating, and appreciating the efforts of the nursing students remains inspiring for the other students, setting a positive impact for the upcoming years. KONSTAA, as an annual celebration, has become more than an event; it is a tradition that marks the culmination of student journeys, a testament to their resilience, and a guiding them toward continued success. Praise be to Allah, may all the endeavors in education be accepted as acts of Ibadah, and may He bestow abundant blessings.

Evacuation Drill Success

Date: December 13, 2023

by Muhammad Farhan Mahmud

Location: Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM Kuantan, Pahang

Another day at Kulliyyah of Nursing, where every day was an adventure; Wednesday unfolded with a touch of enchantment. The sky, donned in a subtle gloom, whispered tales of the night’s persistent rain—a rhythmic melody that painted the world in shades of silver. However, the spirits of the tight-knit community remained undeterred—a collective acknowledgment of the precious gift of yet another day from Allah SWT. As students ambled towards their classes, vibrant umbrellas unfurled like blossoming flowers, and the courtyard echoed with the laughter of friendships and shared journeys. Inside the classrooms, lecturers transformed knowledge into visual symphonies, their smiles radiant beacons of warmth. Simultaneously, administrative staff and clinical instructors wove their own threads of dedication, tirelessly crafting the framework for another day of growth and camaraderie. Amidst the gentle cadence of raindrops, the Kulliyyah of Nursing emerged as a haven of shared stories, resilience, and the timeless dance of humanity embracing the blessings of a new day.

Suddenly, a deafening explosion echoed through the air, sending shockwaves through the whole building. The disconcerting sound reverberated, leaving everyone momentarily frozen in confusion. A cacophony of screams and cries erupted, creating a chaotic symphony that resonated through the hallways. Puzzled faces turned to one another, searching for answers amid the unexpected turmoil. The atmosphere shifted from one of routine academia to palpable tension—the once lively corridors now filled with a mix of fear and bewilderment. As the unsettling moments unfolded, the building plunged into darkness, the abrupt cessation of electricity plunging the once vibrant surroundings into an inky abyss. The sudden blackness was punctuated by the piercing wail of the fire alarm, its urgent tones adding to the pandemonium. With hearts pounding, the community of the Kulliyyah of Nursing grappled with the unknown; their senses heightened, and a collective question hanging in the air—what had just happened to shatter the tranquility of their blessed Wednesday?

In that critical moment, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) sprang into action, their training and readiness shining through the chaos. Swiftly and with a sense of purpose, the building evacuation commenced, guided by the calming presence of the fire marshal orchestrating the orderly exit. Amid the urgency, a lady with severe third-degree burns and two young ladies frozen with fear on the staircase became focal points of concern. The Search and Rescue team moved decisively, their expertise ensuring the safe extraction of everyone trapped or in distress. In a matter of minutes, the combined efforts of all ERT members and the obedience of all KON Community throughout the process led to a successful evacuation. The assembly area became a sanctuary, where every single soul gathered patiently, their faces etched with a mix of relief and apprehension. The ERT Medical Aid took charge, offering solace and immediate medical attention to the injured victim. Meanwhile, the ERT Fire Fighters prepared to eliminate any lingering threats that could endanger the gathered crowd. As the situation unfolded, a headcount was meticulously conducted, ensuring that no one was left unaccounted for. The efficient collaboration of ERT members, coupled with the calm staff, lecturers, and students, transformed what could have been a tragic incident into a testament of preparedness and swift action within the community of the Kulliyyah of Nursing.

Wait a moment! That was just a drill!

Yeah, an evacuation drill! The Building Evacuation Drill marked a successful culmination, underscoring the meticulous preparation and execution by all participants. This crucial simulation, orchestrated by the Kulliyyah of Nursing Safety and Health Committee (KONSHEC), aimed to ensure that every individual within the community is well-prepared to face adversities in the event of an actual emergency. The drill held particular significance in refining the capabilities of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), led by Dr. Rusila Ruslan as the Incident Commander, ensuring their ability to execute assigned tasks seamlessly for the safety of the entire KON community. The drill was subject to rigorous oversight by the Occupational Safety, Health, and Built Environment (OSHBE), led by Br. Mohd Ariffin Ghazali. As the simulated crisis unfolded, the event served as a valuable training ground for all participants, reinforcing the importance of coordinated and effective responses. Post-drill, a debriefing session and sharing moment were conducted among ERT members to extract lessons learned and identify areas for improvement in future emergency scenarios. This comprehensive approach to preparedness and continual refinement underscored the commitment of the Kulliyyah of Nursing to fostering a safe and secure environment for its community members.
