Organized by the Mainboard of Nursing Students’ Society (NurSS), Kulliyyah of Nursing, in collaboration with KPJ University & KPJ Ampang Puteri, Thomson Hospital, Sunway Medical Centre Velocity, and Nasi Lemak Saleha, the “Nursing Trip: Education in Motion” held from the 19th to the 21st of October 2023 was a resounding success. The trip, meticulously planned and executed, aimed to invigorate nursing students’ academic motivation, foster stronger bonds with external healthcare organizations, provide firsthand experience of educational environments in different facilities, and offer a glimpse into future professional settings and opportunities.

Accompanied by Dr. Rusila Ruslan and Sr. Normazatul Afieda Ahmad Zabik, students were immersed in a rich learning experience every step of the way. They gained invaluable insights into various hospital facilities, witnessed the implementation of cutting-edge technologies, and learned about emerging healthcare practices. This exposure left an indelible impression on all participants. Reflecting on the trip, Sr. Nur Izzati Raduan, the event’s Program Manager, shared her excitement, joy, and a touch of apprehension in anticipating real-world nursing scenarios. “The trip was a remarkable experience for all of us. We were able to witness firsthand the incredible advancements in healthcare technology. Some of the technologies were entirely new to us, and it was eye-opening. This trip not only broadened our understanding but also ignited a sense of excitement about the future of nursing.”

During their visit, students were granted the invaluable opportunity to tour some departments of the hospitals such as the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Emergency Department, Imaging Department, and Cardiac Catheterization Lab. Here, they were provided with in-depth explanations on the hospital’s adoption of cutting-edge systems, particularly in vital signs monitoring and drug administration. These advancements stand as a testament to the institution’s unwavering commitment to elevating patient safety and overall service quality. Witnessing these implementations firsthand allowed the students to appreciate the profound impact of technology on modern healthcare practices. This exposure reinforced the importance of staying abreast of progressive innovations within the nursing profession.

Additionally, students delved into the workings of iodixanol, gaining practical insights into its application. This experience offered a unique glimpse into specialized medical procedures, showcasing the hospital’s dedication to advanced and precise patient care. Witnessing these implementations firsthand allowed the students to appreciate the profound impact of technology on modern healthcare practices. This exposure reinforced the importance of staying abreast of progressive innovations within the nursing profession.

Nur Izzati also hopes that her fellow friends, the students of Kulliyyah of Nursing, will internalize the positivity garnered from the trip, transforming their work environments into sources of inspiration beyond mere remuneration. From this trip, she hopes that all students may realize that nursing career is not about financial gains, but also about embracing opportunities that contribute to personal and professional growth. This successful endeavor has paved the way for future trips, potentially involving a larger pool of students, to further enhance their education and professional development.

Scout Superstars: First Aid Skills Empowering the Next Generation!

In a steadfast commitment to enhancing community well-being, the Flagship 3.0 Community-Based First Aid (CBFA) team, represented by Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, took the reins as the lead instructor in a comprehensive first aid demonstration. This significant event, aptly named “First Aid Demonstration,” unfolded during the Jamboree on The Air (JOTA) and Jamboree on The Internet (JOTI) 2023, held at the esteemed Kulliyyah of Pharmacy, IIUM Kuantan. The educational event held earlier today was made possible through the gracious invitation and organization by the Kumpulan Latihan Kelanasiswa Malaysia (KLKM). It drew over 100 elementary and secondary school students, primarily hailing from Pahang, alongside enthusiastic IIUM students.

Adding depth to the program’s impact, dedicated students from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, who are integral members of the Flagship 3.0 CBFA, also played a central role in the demonstration. Their active involvement showcased the synergy between the staffs and students from the Flagship 3.0 CBFA members in promoting effective first aid practices. The event encompassed insightful talks and hands-on demonstrations, covering a range of vital topics including first aid management for individuals with fractures, bleeding, electrocution incidents, allergic reactions, heat strokes, and those affected by bites or stings from poisonous animals. Each session was conducted with a focus on professionalism and accuracy, ensuring that participants gained actionable knowledge.

Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, with her extensive expertise in first aid and emergency management, guided participants through practical scenarios, providing them with invaluable skills to respond effectively in emergency situations. She commented, “Our team is deeply committed to promoting substantial awareness and a strong understanding of first aid for both physical and psychological injuries. Our objective is to enhance the resilience and sustainability of individuals and communities.”

This demonstration not only equipped attendees with life-saving knowledge but also exemplified the power of community collaboration in bolstering collective safety. Kulliyyah of Nursing Shines in IIUM Kuantan Merdeka Parade 2023

On September 15, 2023, the IIUM Kuantan Merdeka Parade 2023 witnessed a vibrant display of unity and patriotism, with contingents from various Kulliyyahs and Department Offices, along with the enthusiastic participation of SASMEC @IIUM. Among the standout participants was the contingent from Kulliyyah of Nursing, whose resounding message of “Save A Life, You Are a Hero; Save A Thousand, You Are a Nurse” echoed through the parade grounds.

Led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Azmir Ahmad, the Kulliyyah of Nursing’s marching band comprised lecturers from various departments, nurse officers, clinical nursing instructors, staff nurses, and administrative personnel. Their presence in the parade was a testament to the dedication and commitment of the nursing community in nurturing the future generation of Malaysia.

During the parade, the Kulliyyah of Nursing contingent showcased a thought-provoking gimmick—a demonstration of baby choking. This impactful presentation aimed to highlight the critical role that nursing plays in safeguarding the health and well-being of the nation’s youth. Highlights from the Preceptorship Training Course 2022

In a concerted effort to nurture the relationship between Kulliyyah of Nursing and the dedicated staff nurses at SASMEC @IIUM, as well as to equip them with the skills to be exceptional preceptors to new nurses and students, the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC), Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, in collaboration with SASMEC @IIUM, conducted the much-anticipated Preceptorship Training Course 2022. Held on the 24th and 25th of November 2022, the event proved to be a comprehensive platform for learning and skill-building.

This two-day course witnessed active participation from the dedicated staff nurses of SASMEC @IIUM, signifying their commitment to continuous professional development. The program’s curriculum was meticulously designed to encompass a balanced mix of theory sessions, lectures, group discussions, and scenario presentations.

The distinguished lineup of speakers and facilitators, all esteemed lecturers from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, included Asst. Prof. Dr. Ashikin Atan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Aniawanis Makhtar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Noor Azizah Mohd Ali, Asst. Prof. Dr. Siti Hazariah Abdul Hamid, Asst. Prof. Dr. Hanida Hani Mohd Mokhtar, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Norfadzilah Ahmad. Their wealth of knowledge and expertise significantly enriched the course, providing participants with invaluable insights and practical skills.

A notable highlight of the program was the group presentations, wherein real-life scenarios were role-played by the participants. This interactive session not only demonstrated the participants’ grasp of the concepts but also encouraged collaborative learning. It was universally acknowledged as the most engaging segment of the course. These role-plays were evaluated by the facilitators, and the standout groups were recognized with well-deserved prizes.

Participants left the Preceptorship Training Course equipped with a wealth of knowledge and practical information to apply directly in clinical settings. The program’s structured approach and expert guidance undoubtedly contributed to the participants’ enhanced confidence in their roles as preceptors. As a bonus, each participant was provided with an e-Module, serving as a valuable reference guide for continued learning and application of preceptorship skills. This additional resource is poised to support their growth as effective preceptors in their respective clinical environments.

The Preceptorship Training Course 2022 was a resounding success, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Clinical Skills Centre and SASMEC @IIUM. The dedication of the participants, combined with the expertise of the speakers and facilitators, created a dynamic learning environment that promises to have a positive impact on the quality of preceptorship within SASMEC @IIUM.

Brotherhood and Unity in Islam: KON Ibadah Camp 2023

In a spirit of camaraderie and collective learning, the Department of Basic Medical Sciences for Nursing (BMSN), Kulliyyah of Nursing, led by Asst. Prof. Dr. Azmir Ahmad, orchestrated the KON Ibadah Camp 2023. This enriching event brought together all academic and administrative staff of Kulliyyah of Nursing and was held at the esteemed Auditorium, Library IIUM Kuantan and Kulliyyah of Nursing building, on the 5th and 6th of October 2023. The camp revolved around the theme of “Brotherhood and Unity in Islam.”

The camp was a testament to the commitment of the KON Community in fostering a holistic education that goes beyond the conventional classroom setting. The carefully curated activities and talks aimed to imbue attendees with a deeper understanding of their faith and the importance of unity within the Muslim ummah.

The event featured a series of insightful talks on a range of significant topics. “Tajwid and Tafsir” by Ustaz Kamarulzaman Seman from CELPAD delved into the finer nuances of Quranic recitation and interpretation, providing attendees with a richer connection to the holy text. “Understanding the Fundamentals of Ahlusnnal Wal Jama’ah against Deviant Teachings and Different Mazhab in Fiqh” delivered by br. Abdul Rahman Al-Azmi from SASMEC @IIUM; elucidated crucial concepts within Sunni Islam, equipping participants with a solid foundation in orthodox Islamic thought.

In this event, Dr. Mohd Yusof Mohamad from the Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences (KAHS) also delivered his talk entitled “How To Strengthen Islamic Brotherhood and Achieve Ummatic Unity” addressed the pressing need for unity among Muslims, providing practical strategies for fostering stronger bonds within the community. before they called it a day on the first day of the event, Dr. Muhamad Ashraf Rostam, also from KAHS had presented his speech on the “Teamwork and Altruistic Behavior” which highlighted the importance of collaboration and selflessness in achieving collective goals.

Beyond intellectual nourishment, the camp also emphasized the value of physical and environmental well-being. A gotong royong session held on the second day of the camp brought participants together to tidy up and clean the KON building and its surroundings. This act of communal service not only fostered a sense of responsibility towards the environment but also reinforced the message of unity in action.

KON Ibadah Camp 2023 was a resounding success, thanks to the meticulous planning and dedication of the BMSN department and dedication from all staffs of Kulliyyah of Nursing. The camp not only provided valuable insights into various aspects of Islam but also served as a platform for attendees to forge lasting bonds and strengthen their sense of community. The collective efforts during the gotong royong session further underscored the importance of active participation in the betterment of the environment and society at large.

Empowering Engineering Students: A Milestone in Life-Saving Education

In a proactive move towards equipping Engineering students; with essential first aid and life-saving skills, the Department of Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (MME), Kulliyyah of Engineering, IIUM, organized an event of great significance on 13th October 2023. In line with the event’s objectives, facilitators from the Flagship 3.0 Community-Based First Aid (CBFA) team, including members from Kulliyyah of Nursing, Kulliyyah of Science, and Kulliyyah of Dentistry, were specially invited to contribute their expertise, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the session. Asst. Prof. Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin, a prominent figure in the field, led the program, delivering a comprehensive talk and practical demonstration session. The event took place at the esteemed Auditorium A, Block E2, Kulliyyah of Engineering, IIUM Gombak. This venue provided an ideal setting for hands-on learning and interactive discussions.

The session covered a wide array of first aid techniques, including bandaging methods, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), stop the bleeding method, and various other essential first aid procedures. The audience, consisting a group of Engineering students (Year 1 until Year 4 ) from the Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Engineering of Kulliyyah of Engineering, found the session not only informative but also immensely practical. The initiative stands as a testament to the commitment of Kulliyyah of Engineering and the Flagship 3.0 CBFA team in fostering a holistic education that goes beyond theoretical knowledge. By providing students with critical life-saving skills, the department aims to empower them with tools that can make a real difference in emergency situations.

The program also served as a valuable platform for students to receive knowledge and input crucial for their upcoming internship program. The practical insights gained during the session, coupled with the facilitators’ meticulous guidance, ensured that all students actively engaged and proficiently performed the acquired skills. The facilitators’ personalized advice and comprehensive guidance not only equipped the students with essential skills but also instilled a strong understanding of safe workplace practices. International Perinatal Mental Health Seminar 2023

In a groundbreaking endeavor to prioritize mental health in perinatal care, the Department of Special Care Nursing, Kulliyyah of Nursing, in collaboration with the UK-South East Asia Maternal Mental Health Partnership, successfully hosted the International Perinatal Mental Health Seminar 2023. This landmark event, held on March 2nd, 2023, at the prestigious Auditorium Kulliyyah of Nursing, garnered significant attention from both local and international stakeholders.

The seminar introduced an innovative hybrid approach to knowledge-sharing, seamlessly integrating both in-person and virtual participation. This forward-thinking format ensured that the seminar’s valuable insights reached a wider audience, transcending geographical boundaries. A diverse gathering of 95 participants, including healthcare professionals, academics, researchers, and advocates, underscored the urgent need to address perinatal mental health. Their shared dedication to advancing maternal mental health was palpable throughout the event.

Distinguished speakers, each an authority in their respective fields, shared their expertise. Prof. Helen Cheyne, internationally recognized for her contributions to perinatal mental health, provided insights that have influenced policies and practices on a global scale. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Roshaidai Mohd Arifin, a leading figure in women’s mental health, presented research pivotal to advancing the field of perinatal mental health. Prof. Dr. Ramli Musa, an eminent authority in psychiatry, offered a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between mental health and perinatal care. Prof. Fiona Harris, with extensive experience in maternal and child health, shared expertise instrumental in enhancing the well-being of mothers and infants. Professor Margaret Maxwell, renowned for her contributions to public health and maternal mental health, added a crucial perspective to the seminar.

The seminar’s primary aim was to advocate for comprehensive approaches that prioritize perinatal mental health within existing healthcare systems. By engaging international luminaries, the event sought to amplify the call for inclusive strategies that comprehensively address the mental well-being of mothers during pregnancy and postpartum. The International Perinatal Mental Health Seminar 2023 marked a significant milestone in the global discourse on maternal mental health. Pacific Partnership Exercise 2023 @ Kulliyyah of Nursing

In a historic collaboration, the US Pacific Fleet, Malaysian Armed Forces, and the Pahang State Health Department joined forces with the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM to present the Pacific Partnership Exercise 2023. Held from September 5th to 15th, 2023, at the esteemed Kulliyyah of Nursing, the event proved instrumental in propelling healthcare education and expertise in Malaysia.

Under the adept leadership of Dr. Siti Azuna Abu Bakar, the Chief of this mission, the Pacific Partnership Exercise 2023 featured an extensive range of training programs. These encompassed Advanced Life Support (ALS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Trauma Nursing Core Course, and First Aid with CPR. Each course was meticulously tailored to address the distinctive needs of healthcare providers tending to patients of all ages.

A diverse audience, including staff nurses all over the Pahang state, assistant medical officers, and army nurses from the Malaysian Armed Forces, IIUM community, and ambitious secondary school students from SMK Paya Besar and SMK Sultan Abu Bakar with aspirations in the healthcare field, reaped the benefits of the exercise.

In conjunction with the exercise, a hybrid nursing seminar was conducted. Combining in-person and virtual participation, this innovative approach facilitated a broader reach, enabling healthcare professionals from various locations to partake in enriching discussions and knowledge-sharing.

The Pacific Partnership Exercise 2023 achieved remarkable success, with participants not only gaining invaluable knowledge but also honing their practical skills. The event not only provided high-level nursing education but also empowered healthcare professionals with the expertise required to save lives, regardless of age.

IIUM International Conference of Nursing 2023

The IIUM International Conference of Nursing 2023, held from July 12-13 at the Swiss-Belhotel in Kuantan, Malaysia, has concluded on a high note. The event, organized by the esteemed Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, welcomed delegates from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, and Hong Kong. The conference, held under the theme “Future Global Direction in Nursing and Midwifery for Sustainable Healthcare Workforce,” aimed to chart a course towards a sustainable healthcare workforce on a global scale.

Collaborators and co-hosts played a pivotal role in shaping the event. Noteworthy partners included SASMEC @IIUM, the Nursing Council of Public Institution of Higher Learning, the Malaysian Nurses Association (MNA), the Faculty of Nursing of Universitas Indonesia, KPJ Healthcare University, and Syedza Saintika, Indonesia. The event was officially inaugurated by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, YB Dato’ Haji Mohammad Yusof Bin Apdal, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing the nursing profession.

The event successfully achieved its objectives, thanks to the insightful presentations by all speakers and the research contributions of total 76 presenters. Discussions spanned a wide array of topics vital to the nursing profession. From exploring cutting-edge healthcare technologies to formulating strategies for patient-centered care, participants engaged in forward-thinking dialogues that showcased the dynamism of the global nursing community.

The conference’s resounding success is a testament to the collective commitment of the nursing community to advance the future of healthcare. By bringing together minds from diverse backgrounds and regions, the event propelled discussions that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the nursing profession, paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable healthcare workforce worldwide.
