20 Procedures Hands-On for Youth at the Clinical Skills Centre, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM Kuantan
The Clinical Skills Centre (CSC), Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM held a highly engaging event, “20 Procedures Hands-On for Youth” , on the 14th and 15th of December 2024. As a key highlight of the Kulliyyah of Nursing Festival 2024 (KONFest 2024) and part of KON’s 20th Anniversary Celebration Activities, the event successfully brought together the Kuantan community for two days of interactive learning and discovery.

Transforming the CSC into an educational hub, the programme invited participants to engage in 20 essential nursing procedures prepared by the CSC team. The activities were designed to provide participants with an opportunity to experience essential nursing skills through demonstrations, simulations, hands-on activities, health education and interactive learning.

Introduction to fundamental gastrointestinal nursing care.

Bandaging & Simple Dressing

Basic techniques for wound protection and injury management.

Wound Dressing & Management

Demonstrating principles of appropriate wound care.

Positioning & Lifting

Safe patient positioning and movement techniques.

Visual Acuity Testing

Introduction to visual acuity assessment using the Snellen chart.

Blood Pressure Measurement

Hands-on exposure to one of the most important vital sign assessments.

Pulse, Respiratory Rate & Temperature

Learning the fundamentals of vital-sign monitoring.

Lung Auscultation Simulation

Simulated lung auscultation using the high-fidelity Physiko mannequin.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Introduction to CPR and lifesaving emergency response.

Basic First Aid

Practical exposure to essential first-aid principles.

Suctioning

Demonstrating airway secretion management techniques.

Hand Hygiene

Reinforcing appropriate hand hygiene and infection prevention.

Personal Protective Equipment

Demonstrating proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Breast Self-Examination

Health education on breast awareness and self-examination.

Deep Breathing & Coughing Exercises

Introducing basic respiratory exercises commonly used in nursing care.

Blood Glucose Monitoring

Demonstration of blood glucose monitoring procedures.

Nursing Procedure Videos

Informative video displays supporting participants’ learning.

Interactive Demonstrations

Opportunities to observe and practise nursing skills under guidance.

Health Education

Connecting clinical nursing knowledge with everyday health awareness.

Knowledge Quiz

An interactive quiz summarising key lessons from the programme.

Over two days, more than 650 visitors—from preschool children and school students to university learners and members of the public—experienced the knowledge, skills and dedication involved in professional nursing practice.

Over the course of two days, the event attracted more than 650 visitors , including preschoolers, primary and secondary school students, university undergraduates, postgraduates and members of the public. The six participating local schools, together with their accompanying teachers, engaged enthusiastically with the programme, creating a lively atmosphere of learning and discovery.

Nursing Students as Facilitators

Our nursing students played an instrumental role as facilitators, guiding visitors through each procedure and fostering meaningful interactions. Their involvement not only enhanced the visitors’ experience but also provided valuable communication and teaching opportunities for the nursing students, bridging the gap between academic learning and community service.

The programme left a significant impression on attendees, with many expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to experience the complex yet vital skills of nursing. Parents and teachers commended the initiative for its educational value and engaging approach, which successfully combined hands-on learning with fun and interactive elements.

The “20 Procedures Hands-On for Youth” programme exemplified KON’s commitment to community engagement and healthcare education. As part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations, the event stood as a testament to the Kulliyyah’s dedication to fostering a greater understanding of nursing and its essential role in healthcare. Looking ahead, the success of this event sets a promising foundation for future initiatives by KON and IIUM, ensuring that education, community engagement and healthcare excellence remain at the heart of their mission.
