International Nursing Summer School 2024

The International Nursing Summer Camp, held from 21st July to 4th August 2024, at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia, brought together a diverse group of nursing students including the nursing students from Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, under the theme “Harmony in Healthcare: Summer School on Islamic and Cultural Integration in Nursing Practice.” This two-week program provided an immersive experience that emphasized the integration of Islamic and cultural perspectives into nursing practice.

The program was designed to achieve several key objectives:

  • Cultural Competence in Nursing: Participants developed a deeper understanding of how cultural beliefs, values, and practices influence health behaviors and outcomes. The program aimed to equip them with strategies to provide culturally sensitive care.
  • Communication Skills: The camp focused on enhancing participants’ communication skills, particularly in interacting effectively with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Culturally Sensitive Interventions: Participants were trained to design and implement nursing interventions that are sensitive to the cultural contexts of their patients.

The summer camp offered a mix of educational and cultural activities that enriched the participants’ learning experience:

Educational Programs

  • Lectures: A series of lectures were conducted, covering a wide range of topics related to the psychosocial and cultural aspects of nursing. These sessions provided the theoretical foundation for culturally competent nursing care.
  • Skill Lab and Tutorial: Practical sessions focused on preventive and treatment methods based on the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and Indonesian cultural practices. Participants also engaged in tutorial sessions to discuss and analyze case studies.
  • Community Service: Participants had the opportunity to interact with the local community, conducting health check-ups and applying their newly acquired skills in a real-world setting.

Cultural Programs

  • Gerabah Workshop: Participants learned the art of creating and painting their own pottery, experiencing traditional Indonesian craftsmanship firsthand.
  • Karst Tubing: A thrilling adventure that took participants down a river winding through caves and karst formations, providing a unique way to appreciate the natural beauty of Yogyakarta.
  • Gamelan Class: An introduction to the traditional Javanese musical ensemble, where participants learned about and played the gamelan.
  • Kraton Jogja & Museum Sonobudoyo: Participants explored the rich history and culture of Java through visits to the royal palace and a cultural museum.
  • International Night: A cultural exchange event where participants shared and celebrated the traditions of their respective countries, fostering international understanding and camaraderie.

The International Nursing Summer Camp 2024 successfully blended educational rigor with cultural immersion, leaving participants with a profound appreciation for the role of cultural integration in nursing practice. The program not only enhanced their professional skills but also broadened their perspectives, preparing them to provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care in their future careers.

International Health & Culture Mobility Programme hosted by Universitas Brawijaya

Location: Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, East Java, Indonesia.

The International Health and Culture Mobility Programme, organized by the Faculty of Health Sciences at Universitas Brawijaya in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, was held from 6 to 18 2024. This enriching program was designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to engage in academic activities, cultural exchange, and personal development. Notably, students from the Kulliyyah of Nursing (KON) were among the participants, actively involved in this culture-enriching experience.

The program aimed to immerse students in Indonesian culture, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the country’s traditions, languages, and societal norms. Additionally, it provided an overseas academic experience, promoting personal growth and intercultural awareness. The program also focused on developing students’ independence, resilience, and intercultural communication skills, benefiting their future careers.

Participants from IIUM included Yasmin Binti Mohammad Mansor, Nur Alia Izzati Binti Fauzi, and Siti Nur Aqilah Izzati Binti Rosli, all of whom shared their positive experiences. They emphasized the program’s impact on their academic and personal growth, expressing gratitude for the chance to experience Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage. The warm hospitality of the Indonesian people made them feel welcomed and integrated into the local community.

Universitas Brawijaya, situated in a picturesque mountain area, provided a unique and natural backdrop for learning and exploration. Exposure to different teaching methods and academic approaches enriched the students’ academic experiences, particularly through community mental health programs at Puskesmas Bantur. Adapting to a new environment fostered personal growth, increased confidence, and improved intercultural communication skills. Engaging in daily activities and academic courses in Bahasa Indonesia and English helped students enhance their language skills.

A three-day internship at Rumah Sakit Saiful Anwar provided valuable insights into Indonesia’s clinical settings and practical experience in their fields of study. The program included several activities that left lasting impressions, such as community health visits to Posyandu Janti and Puskesmas Janti, an excursion to Mount Bromo, and the clinical internship at Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah Saiful Anwar. The participants of this mobility programme also had a chance to visit Puskesmas Bantur, which offered insights into community mental health programs.

In conclusion, the International Health and Culture Mobility Programme was a resounding success, providing students with a well-rounded experience that combined academic learning, cultural immersion, and personal development. Participants returned with enriched perspectives, newfound confidence, and valuable skills that will benefit them in their future careers. The program’s emphasis on cultural exchange, academic enrichment, and personal growth made it a memorable and transformative experience for all involved, particularly highlighting the active participation and involvement of the Kulliyyah of Nursing students.

Officiating Ceremony of KON 20th Anniversary and ODL Studio

The Kulliyyah of Nursing, International Islamic University Malaysia celebrated a significant milestone with the officiating ceremony of its 20th anniversary and the launch of the Open Distance Learning (ODL) studio. This momentous event was graced by Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, Rector of IIUM, and held at the Auditorium, KON.

The day began with a special presentation delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing. The presentation showcased the journey and achievements of the Kulliyyah, highlighting its progress over the years, its contributions to the field of nursing, and the innovative steps it has taken to enhance nursing education. Following the presentation, a lively question-and-answer session with Tan Sri Rector allowed attendees to engage directly with him, gaining insights and sharing their perspectives.

After the engaging session, Tan Sri Rector delivered an inspiring speech, commending KON for its remarkable achievements and emphasizing the importance of continuous innovation in education and contribution to the community. The highlight of the event was the official officiation of the KON 20th Anniversary and the ODL studio by Tan Sri Rector. The ODL studio is a state-of-the-art facility designed to support various educational activities, including podcast production, webinars, online classes, educational video recordings, video conferencing, and clinical simulation video recordings. This facility will play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of nursing education at IIUM, providing students and faculty with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Following the officiation ceremony, Tan Sri Rector and the university committee members toured the ODL studio and the KON achievement booth. The booth displayed various milestones and accomplishments of the Kulliyyah, showcasing the dedication and hard work of its kulliyyah and students.

This event was held in conjunction with the Special Engagement of the Rector with all Kulliyyah in the Kuantan Campus, emphasizing the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to excellence that defines IIUM. The celebration of KON’s 20th anniversary and the launch of the ODL studio marks a significant step forward in the Kulliyyah’s journey, setting the stage for future successes and innovations in nursing education.

Qualitative Research Workshop

The Department of Special Care Nursing, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, hosted the “Qualitative Research Workshop 2024” held on 25th July 2024 at Auditorium, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. The workshop, aimed at healthcare professionals, researchers, and students, was inaugurated by Prof. Samsul Draman, the Deputy Campus Director (Academic Support Services), IIUM Kuantan, who emphasized the importance of qualitative research in understanding complex healthcare issues and enhancing patient care. The event began with the national anthem, IIUM “Leading The Way” Song, and Assma ul-Husna, followed by a Du’a recitation by Br. Akmal Ibrahim. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlina Daud, Deputy Dean of the Centre Postgraduate Students (CPS), IIUM Kuantan Campus, delivered opening remarks highlighting the workshop’s objectives and the value of qualitative research in nursing.

The program featured expert speakers from IIUM’s Kulliyyah of Nursing, covering a range of topics. Dr. Amirah Fatin Ibrahim provided an introduction to qualitative research, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Siew Pien discussed data collection techniques such as observation. Dr. Siti Hazariah Abd Hamid elaborated on document analysis techniques, and Dr. Nurasikin Mohamad Shariff covered interviewing and focus group discussions. Dr. Nurul Akma Jamil spoke on the role of social media in research, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Roshaidai Mohd Arifin addressed techniques for qualitative data analysis and interpretation. The afternoon sessions included a presentation on the quality of studies by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Mariam Muda and a hands-on activity on NVivo software for qualitative research by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Siew Pien and Dr. Nurasikin Mohamad Shariff.

Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in Q&A sessions, participated in a lucky draw, and benefited from interactive and practical sessions designed to enhance their qualitative research skills. The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Siti Hazariah Abd Hamid, Head of the Department of Special Care Nursing, followed by a tea break and dispersal. This comprehensive workshop provided a valuable platform for attendees to gain insights, share knowledge, and develop essential skills in qualitative research methodologies.

Symposium Updates in Healthcare Technology 2024

The Department of Critical Care Nursing, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, successfully hosted the “Symposium Updates in Healthcare Technology 2024” held on Auditorium Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. This event, aimed at healthcare providers, researchers, and students, provided a platform for discussing the latest advancements and innovations in healthcare technology.

The symposium began with opening remarks by Prof. Dr. Salizar Mohamed Ludin, Deputy Dean of Postgraduate, Responsible Research & Innovation setting an inspiring tone for the day’s events. Respected speakers, including Dr. Sufian Bin Safaai, an Emergency Physician from Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA), shared his journey as a self-taught programmer, emphasizing the critical role of programming skills in modern healthcare. Madam Helen Ng Hoy Loon, Senior General Manager of Robotics Surgery and MIS Services at Sunway Medical Centre, highlighted advancements in robotics-assisted minimally invasive surgery, showcasing the cutting-edge developments in surgical technology. Dr. Syaharatul Patimah Kamarudin, a Public Health Physician from the Health Technology Assessment Unit of the Ministry of Health, provided insights into the current and future landscape of healthcare technology, emphasizing the potential for improved patient outcomes.

The event featured a variety of interesting booths, including exhibitions on wet sample pathology, microscope histology viewing, microbe plates, bacterial growth, blood type testing, aging simulator suits, and more. Notable booths included the breast cancer awareness displays and virtual reality health education by Majlis Kanser Nasional (MAKNA), and in vitro fertilization technology showcases. Participants had the opportunity to engage with interactive exhibits, gaining hands-on experience with the latest healthcare technologies. The symposium concluded with a closing remark, reflecting on the day’s learnings and the importance of continuous innovation in healthcare.

We hope that the event served as a valuable platform for participants to acquire new information, share insights, and exchange ideas, ultimately contributing to the advancement of healthcare technology. The symposium, with its rich program and diverse exhibits, underscored IIUM’s commitment to fostering knowledge and innovation in the healthcare sector.

A Milestones of Joy & Blessing

Join us as we celebrate a significant milestone in the history of the Kulliyyah of Nursing! On the 21st of June, 2024, the staff and students of the Kulliyyah of Nursing came together for a memorable cake-cutting ceremony to mark our 20th anniversary. This joyous occasion was made even more special as it coincided with the Eid ul-Adha celebration, bringing a festive spirit to the event.
 
In a grand gesture symbolizing 20 years of excellence, 20 cakes were assembled for the celebration. Each cake represented a year of our commitment to nursing education and community service.
 
In addition to commemorating our anniversary and celebrating Eid ul-Adha, we also hosted the Redha Muallim Gathering. This gathering was an opportunity for students to seek blessings and guidance as they prepare for their final examinations for Semester II of the 2023/2024 academic session.

Mental Health Awareness Talk – A Holistic Approach for Students and Staff

Auditorium of Kulliyyah of Nursing hosted a highly successful Mental Health Awareness Talk titled “A Holistic Approach for Students and Staff.” The event, organized by the Kulliyyah of Nursing Safety, Health, Environment Committee (KONSHEC), featured Madam Nor Akmariah Abdullah, a respected lecturer and counselor from UNISEL, as the keynote speaker. Madam Nor Akmariah shared her expertise on holistic approaches to mental health, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental well-being comprehensively by considering physical, emotional, and social aspects.

The session was interactive, with participants actively engaging in discussions and sharing their experiences. Madam Nor Akmariah provided practical tips on stress management, maintaining a balanced lifestyle, and building a supportive community, making the session dynamic and engaging. Attendees appreciated the comprehensive approach and the valuable resources shared, leaving them better equipped to handle their mental health challenges. The talk successfully raised awareness about mental health issues and fostered a sense of community among students and staff. Completion of Inbound Student Mobility Programme 2024 from UBD

The Kulliyyah of Nursing proudly announces the successful completion of the Inbound Student Mobility Programme for the final year nursing students from Universiti Brunei Darussalam. This comprehensive three-month programme has provided these aspiring future healthcare professionals with invaluable clinical experience and mentorship, setting a robust foundation for their future careers in nursing.

Throughout their stay, the students were immersed in a variety of clinical environments at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC @IIUM). They gained hands-on experience in several wards and departments, including the Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical Ward, Obstetric and Gynecology Wards, Operation Theatre, and many more. This diverse exposure allowed them to develop a well-rounded skill set, crucial for their professional growth and competence in the nursing field.

Additionally, the students engaged in mentoring sessions facilitated by the experienced lecturers of the Kulliyyah of Nursing. These sessions were instrumental in guiding the students through their clinical experiences, offering both academic support and professional advice. The mentorship not only enriched their learning journey but also fostered a supportive and nurturing environment, essential for their personal and professional development.

On 16th May 2024, in conjunction with the Professional Examination 2024 result announcement ceremony for our final year students, and Nurses Day Celebration; a heartfelt farewell ceremony was held for the twelve Universiti Brunei Darussalam students. This event was a fitting conclusion to their journey at IIUM, celebrating their achievements and the bonds formed during the programme. The ceremony was attended by the kulliyyah members, and final year students who gathered to honor the students’ hard work and dedication.

As we celebrate the completion of this programme, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to them. Their dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence have been truly commendable. We are confident that the knowledge and skills they have acquired during this programme will significantly contribute to their success in future endeavors. We wish them all the best as they embark on their nursing careers and continue to uphold the highest standards of healthcare. May they always remain compassionate caregivers and exemplary professionals in the field of nursing.
