EMPOWERING FIRST RESPONDERS

KUANTAN — In critical medical emergencies, the line between life and loss is often measured in seconds. Recognizing the essential role that all healthcare professionals play in these crucial moments, a powerful collaboration unfolded on October 10, 2026, at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The Department of Critical Care Nursing at IIUM's Kulliyyah of Nursing joined forces with the Malaysian Pharmacists Society (MPS) Pahang to host a comprehensive Basic Life Support (BLS) Workshop. Held at the state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) in Kuantan, the intensive session aimed to bridge disciplines, transforming local pharmacy professionals into confident first responders.

Led by dedicated faculty members from the Department of Critical Care Nursing, the workshop was far more than a standard lecture. These experienced educators served as both lead speakers and expert facilitators, guiding participants through rigorous, hands-on practical training.

The core of the curriculum focused heavily on mastering essential cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques. Participants engaged in simulated scenarios, practicing the precise rhythm of chest compressions and rescue breaths necessary to sustain life during sudden cardiac arrest. Beyond CPR, the training encompassed critical emergency response skills, ensuring these professionals are equipped to act decisively when immediate medical intervention is required.

This initiative highlights a vital, evolving paradigm in modern healthcare: the breaking down of silos.

Pharmacists, often the most accessible healthcare providers in the community, are perfectly positioned to initiate life-saving measures before emergency medical services arrive.

Enhancing Patient Care

By empowering these pharmacy professionals with advanced BLS capabilities, this collaboration between IIUM and MPS Pahang reinforces a strong, shared commitment across healthcare disciplines. It is a proactive step toward significantly enhancing patient care and elevating medical emergency readiness throughout the community, ensuring that more hands are ready to save a life when every second counts.
