Nurturing Future Leaders: Kem Remaja Intelek Empowers Teens with Islamic Knowledge

Date: November 11, 2023

by Muhammad Farhan Mahmud & Dr. Mohamad Firdaus Mohamad Ismail

Location: Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM

The Islamisation of Human Knowledge (IOHK), Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, recently hosted a transformative event known as “Kem Remaja Intelek” at the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM Kuantan. This enlightening initiative brought together teenagers aged 12 to 18 years old with the noble objective of fostering a profound understanding of Islam, aiming to shape them into future leaders and Khalifahs of the Ummah.

The event, held in the nurturing environment of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, provided a platform for teens to delve into the teachings of Islam and develop a strong connection of faith. Guided by the principles of the al-Quran and the profound wisdom of Prophet Muhammad, the Kem Remaja Intelek aimed to empower teenagers with the knowledge and values that would enable them to become exemplary leaders in the future. One of the foundational principles for this initiative is rooted in the Hadith where Prophet Muhammad PBUH emphasized the importance of nurturing the younger generation. The Prophet PBUH said:

“A strong believer is better and dearer to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in both. Adhere to whatever brings you benefit, seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If something befalls you, do not say: ‘Had I done such-and-such, it would be such-and-such.’ Indeed, the word ‘if’ opens the way before the devil to act.” Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (Sahih Muslim)

This hadith underscores the importance of instilling resilience, faith, and a sense of purpose in the youth, aligning with the objectives of this camp. By providing a space for intellectual growth and spiritual development, the event aspires to mold the youth into responsible and informed Khalifah, poised to lead the Ummah with wisdom and integrity. One of the foundational principles for this initiative is rooted in Surah Al-Imran (3:110):

“You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah . If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.”

This verse emphasizes the responsibility of believers to exemplify righteousness, promote goodness, and stand against injustice. It serves as a guiding principle for Kem Remaja Intelek, inspiring teenagers to embody the values of a model community. The event seeks to instill the values of knowledge, compassion, and leadership in teenagers, aligning with the teachings of the al-Quran. By providing a space for intellectual growth and spiritual development, the event aspires to mold the youth into responsible and informed Khalifahs, poised to lead the Ummah with wisdom and integrity.

As we invest in the education and empowerment of our teenagers today, we contribute to building a brighter and more enlightened future for the entire Ummah. This camp stands as a testament to the commitment of IOHK and the Kulliyyah of Nursing in nurturing the next generation of leaders who will carry the torch of Islamic knowledge and principles forward.

Flagship 3.0 CBFA in Pacific Partnership Exercise (PPE) 2023 collaboration

Date: September 6, 2023

by Dr. Nurul’Ain Ahayalimudin & Muhammad Farhan Mahmud

Location: SMK Sultan Abu Bakar & SMK Paya Besar, Kuantan, Pahang

In collaboration with PPE 2023, the Community-based First Aid (CBFA) flagship team of Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, is honoured to share our knowledge and skills on first aid with two schools in Kuantan: Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Paya Besar and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Abu Bakar. The team was divided into two, with about 60 school pupils from each school involved in the session.

Besides first aid, the school pupils were also taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and ‘stop the bleed’. These are important skills and techniques that can save lives in emergencies. First aid is the initial care provided to a person who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before professional medical help arrives. It aims to preserve life, prevent the condition from worsening, and promote recovery. Meanwhile, CPR is a life-saving technique used when the heartbeat or breathing have stopped. It consists of chest compressions and rescue breaths to circulate oxygen-rich blood to vital organs until professional medical help arrives.

A new basic life-saving technique was introduced during this exercise, Stop the Bleed. It is a national campaign in the United States and is now being introduced worldwide, aimed at teaching people how to control severe bleeding, which can occur in accidents or mass casualty events. It emphasises rapid response to stop life-threatening bleeding using basic techniques and tools.

These are essential skills to have in case of an emergency, and taking courses to become certified in first aid, CPR, and Stop the Bleed is highly recommended. Many organisations, such as the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross, offer training programs in these life-saving techniques. Being prepared and knowing how to respond in an emergency can make a significant difference in saving lives and minimising the impact of injuries.

Workshop on curriculum development MAP in Midwifery

Date: September 27, 2023

by Dr. Siti Hazariah Abdul Hamid

Location: Hotel Mega View, Kuantan.

SCN department members crafting a Comprehensive Curriculum for Master of Advanced Practice in Midwifery. Midwifery is a profoundly impactful field within the healthcare industry, providing essential care and support to women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The role of a midwife has evolved significantly over the years, and as a result, the education and training required to become a midwife have also transformed.

Midwifery, once an occupation deeply rooted in tradition and oral knowledge, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Modern midwives are highly educated healthcare professionals who work collaboratively with obstetricians and other specialists to ensure the safety and well-being of expectant mothers and their babies. This shift in the role of midwives necessitates an advanced curriculum that equips them with a diverse set of skills, knowledge, and competencies.

Key Components of a MAP in Midwifery are:

  1. Core Midwifery Knowledge and Skills: A Master of Advanced Practice in Midwifery curriculum include a strong foundation in core midwifery knowledge and skills. This encompasses understanding the physiology of pregnancy and childbirth, hands-on clinical skills, and evidence-based practice in prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care.
  2. Advanced Clinical Skills: As advanced practice midwives, students must be prepared to handle complex clinical situations. Curricula incorporate advanced clinical skills such as managing high-risk pregnancies, performing specialized procedures, and providing comprehensive well-woman care.
  3. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaboration with other healthcare professionals, including obstetricians, nurses, and neonatal specialists, is a key aspect of modern midwifery. Curricula emphasize the importance of effective communication and teamwork in delivering the best possible care to expectant mothers.
  4. Cultural Competency and Inclusivity: Recognizing and addressing the unique needs of a diverse patient population is essential in midwifery. Curricula should include cultural competency training to ensure that students can provide care that is sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of their patients.
  5. Leadership and Advocacy: As advanced practice midwives, graduates must also be prepared for leadership roles within healthcare organizations and advocacy for midwifery in the broader healthcare system. Leadership and advocacy training should be integral to the curriculum.
  6. Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Staying current with the latest research and evidence-based practices is critical in any healthcare field. Midwifery curricula should include research methodology and critical appraisal skills to enable graduates to contribute to the advancement of their field.
  7. Professional Development: Continuous professional development is a hallmark of any advanced practice profession. The curriculum should include opportunities for ongoing learning and skill development to keep midwives up-to-date with the latest advancements in healthcare.

Responding to Changing Healthcare Needs
A robust Master of Advanced Practice in Midwifery curriculum must be flexible and responsive to changing healthcare needs. This adaptability is crucial because healthcare is a dynamic field with evolving challenges and opportunities. Curricula should be regularly reviewed and updated to integrate emerging best practices and technologies.

Conclusion
The development of a comprehensive curriculum for a Master of Advanced Practice in Midwifery program is a multifaceted and dynamic process. A well-designed curriculum should encompass core midwifery knowledge, advanced clinical skills, interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural competency, leadership, advocacy, research, and professional development. Moreover, it should be adaptable and responsive to changing healthcare needs. By providing students with a robust and forward-thinking education, we can prepare the next generation of advanced practice midwives to meet the evolving needs of expectant mothers and their families, ensuring the best possible care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period.
