The event was technically supported by the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) and gathered 26 experienced, skilled, and competent staff nurses from various wards, units, and clinics across SASMEC @IIUM. The training was meticulously designed to strengthen their roles as preceptors — professional mentors guiding junior nurses and nursing students in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.

Day 1: Knowledge Empowerment and Collaborative Discussion

The programme began with an opening ceremony officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM. The morning sessions focused on topics such as the role of nursing preceptor in modern clinical practice, preceptorship framework and best practices, and Islamic Perspective on Teaching and Mentorship Nursing.

In the afternoon, participants were divided into four groups of team bulding to discuss real-world challenges and recurring issues faced in clinical environments. The discussions were dynamic and solution-focused, encouraging participants to explore innovative strategies in preceptorship. The groups were later tasked with preparing role-play presentations to be showcased on the second day, allowing them to creatively demonstrate problem-solving and teamwork in action.

The discussion sessions were guided by a team of facilitators led by Dr. Hanida Hani Mohd Mokhtar, alongside other experienced academic staff from the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM.

Day 2: Interactive Learning and Role Play Excellence

The second day commenced with a series of interactive lectures delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Noorkhairina Sowtali, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aniawanis Makhtar, and Dr. Ashikin Atan. Their sessions emphasised interesting topics such as, assessing student’s competence in clinical area, art on giving feedback with emotional intelligence, and, spiritual and ethical leadership in preceptorship.

Following the lectures, participants returned to the stage to perform their role-play presentations, showcasing realistic clinical mentorship scenarios that reflected their learning outcomes. Each group impressed the facilitators with their creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking in handling workplace challenges.

Closing Ceremony: Recognising Excellence and Commitment

The programme concluded with a closing ceremony, officiated by Mdm. Asmawati Che Ismail, Head of the Department of Human Resource, SASMEC @IIUM. In her remarks, she congratulated all participants for their active engagement and expressed appreciation to the Kulliyyah of Nursing for their invaluable collaboration and expertise.

The event concluded with the presentation of tokens of appreciation and certificates, celebrating the success and commitment of all involved.

“This Preceptorship Training marks another milestone in our continuous effort to build a culture of mentorship and clinical excellence at SASMEC @IIUM. We hope every participant will bring this spirit of learning and leadership back to their respective units,” said Mdm. Asmawati.

The two-day training not only strengthened the collaboration between SASMEC @ IIUM and the Kulliyyah of Nursing but also reaffirmed their shared mission to cultivate competent, compassionate, and confident nurses who embody the principles of Sejahtera and Ummatic Excellence.

More than 150 Level 2 primary students of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Pandan, Kuantan, experienced a day filled with hands-on learning, active participation, and fun discovery during the Program Murid Sihat dan Selamat. The programme was a collective initiative by the Department of Professional Nursing Studies, Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, led by Dr. Muzaitul Akma Mustapa Kamal Basha, following requests and discussions with SK Pandan.

This effort was supported by members of the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC) and the Department of Critical Care Nursing, Kuliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, and strengthened through the full backing of community partners – Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) Paya Besar and Lepar branches, the Majlis Belia Pahang, and PERKIM. Together, the collaboration highlighted the value of partnerships in empowering young learners with essential knowledge.

A Day of Active Learning

The day began with a cheerful morning stretching exercise led by Br. Muhamad Syazwan Rostam, a fourth-year KON student, which immediately lifted the spirits of the pupils and set an energising tone for the programme. Excited chatter and laughter filled the field as the pupils followed the simple movements, enjoying the sense of togetherness. Next, the pupils were introduced to basic emergency assistance through an engaging talk delivered by Dr. Muzaitul Akma and Dr. Hasanah Pairoh. The session was short, simple, and interactive, designed to capture the children’s attention while explaining how to act during emergencies. Pupils were encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts, and reflect on what they already knew, making the experience relatable and impactful.

Hands-On Exposure Through Learning Stations

After the introductory briefing, the pupils were divided into ten groups and rotated across 10 learning stations, each designed to demonstrate a specific emergency skill includes, seizure and syncope management, handwashing technique, bandaging, simple wound dressing, splinting and arm sling application, choking management, chest compressions and an introduction to CPR, proper handwashing, nosebleed management, early burn management. Every station was facilitated by KON lecturers and clinical instructors, assisted by volunteers from Universiti Islam Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah (UniPSAS) and GPMS Paya Besar members. The pupils were not passive listeners – they practised bandaging each other, tried chest compressions on training manikins, and even demonstrated the correct way to stop a nosebleed under supervision. The hands-on element ensured that the knowledge gained was memorable, practical, and enjoyable. The sight of young children confidently engaging with emergency techniques highlighted how early exposure can instil awareness and resilience, even at a primary school level. Teachers observed with pride as their pupils displayed enthusiasm and curiosity at every station.

The Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, recently concluded a fruitful academic exchange by hosting four nursing students from Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. This collaboration was part of the International Mobility Program (Clinical Credit Transfer), aimed at strengthening academic and professional ties between Malaysian and Indonesian nursing institutions.

The visiting students—Atalie June Artanti, Annaas Firdaus Asyidiq, Nabilla Putri, and Divana Angela Citra Frilia—spent one full semester at IIUM Kuantan, beginning their journey on 1 February 2025 and completing it on 17 July 2025. During their time in Malaysia, they were fully integrated into IIUM’s Year 2 Nursing cohort (Unova Batch), studying and working alongside local nursing students. To enhance peer learning and foster cultural exchange, the Brawijaya students were grouped with Section 9 IIUM Nursing students, namely Muhammad Amar Naushad Kamal Arifin, Arisya Elyana Ahmad Fairuz, Siti Khairiah Musa, Siti Masyitah Ibrahim, and Muhammad Shah Ikmal Junaidi. This integration allowed them to collaborate closely on academic tasks, clinical postings, and various nursing-related activities, strengthening both academic and personal bonds.

Universitas Brawijaya nursing students together with their Section 9 peers, Year 2 Nursing students of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM.

Over the course of 18 weeks of clinical attachment at SASMEC @IIUM, the visiting students gained valuable hands-on experience through four key nursing practice modules:
1. Gastrointestinal, Hepatobiliary and Neurological Nursing Practice
2. Fundamentals of Medical-Surgical and Special Senses Nursing Practice

3. Hemopoietic, Musculoskeletal and Genitourinary Nursing Practice
4. Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Endocrine Nursing Practice (NURC 2324)

Under the academic supervision of the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, they joined all clinical sessions, skill labs, and even participated in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) together with IIUM nursing students. Their clinical training and attachment were well-coordinated by the dedicated nursing officers and staff nurses of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, namely Sr. Nurul Aisyah Safie, Sr. Wan Suraya Wan Kamarudin, and Sr. Nor Haslin Farahin Abdul Hashim, while their overall academic welfare was guided by their appointed caretaker, Dr. Haliza Hasan.

Beyond the academic and clinical aspects, the students also had the opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of Malaysia during their free time. In Kuantan, they enjoyed visits to Teluk Cempedak Beach, Balok Beach, Batu Hitam Beach, Sungai Pandan Waterfall, and East Coast Mall. They also travelled to Kuala Lumpur, where they experienced the city’s highlights including KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), Bukit Bintang, Masjid Jamek, and Central Market. These experiences provided them with cultural insights and memorable moments that complemented their professional learning journey.

The students took part in the OSCE alongside their IIUM peers and also spent time exploring Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur.

Recently, following their participation in the OSCE examinations alongside their IIUM peers, a simple yet meaningful closing ceremony and certificate presentation was held to mark the completion of their programme. The event celebrated their achievements and the strong bonds formed throughout their stay. Certificates of completion were officially presented by the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, in the presence of their caretaker, Dr. Haliza Hasan, and members of the IIUM nursing community who had supported them throughout the semester. The Kulliyyah of Nursing expressed deep appreciation for the visiting students’ commitment, professionalism, and adaptability throughout the programme. Both institutions share a commitment to advancing nursing education and fostering opportunities for students to gain international exposure.

Moving forward, the Kulliyyah of Nursing hopes to continue and expand such initiatives, creating more pathways for nursing students from both Malaysia and Indonesia to learn, share, and grow together. Through these academic exchanges, future nurses will not only develop their clinical expertise but also broaden their cultural perspectives, contributing to a more connected and compassionate healthcare community.
