The Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM recently had the privilege of hosting a delegation from Walailak University, Thailand, for a two-day visit aimed at strengthening academic ties and fostering international collaboration in nursing education.

A Warm Welcome and Opening Remarks

The visit began with a warm welcome by KON representatives and staff. The Opening and Welcoming Ceremony, held in the KON Meeting Room, set a collegial tone for the programme. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, delivered heartfelt welcoming remarks, highlighting the importance of international engagement in nursing education and introducing members of the KON academic team. In response, Asst. Prof. Dr. Orapen Sukhavulli, Dean of the School of Nursing, Walailak University, introduced her delegation and expressed appreciation for the warm reception. She also shared their aspirations for building meaningful and sustained academic partnerships with KON. Dr. Hasanah Pairoh, from KON’s Department of Professional Nursing Studies, served as the focal person for the visit, playing a key role in coordinating the programme and ensuring a smooth and productive exchange.

Institutional Overviews and Campus Insights

The programme continued with institutional presentations from both universities, offering comprehensive overviews of their academic structures, programmes, research initiatives, and international collaborations. A kulliyyah and campus tour followed, showcasing KON’s educational facilities and student-centered learning environment. Led by senior academic and administrative staff, the delegation visited key areas such as lecture halls, tutorial rooms, laboratories, and discussion spaces. They were introduced to various technologies that support theoretical and clinical instruction and briefed on the academic resources available. The visit highlighted KON’s holistic approach to nursing education, blending academic excellence with practical exposure. The Walailak University delegation expressed particular interest in how IIUM integrates Islamic values into its curriculum and staff development, noting the uniqueness of its educational philosophy.

Visit to Clinical Skills Centre (CSC)

The second day of the visit began at 9:30 AM with a tour of the Clinical Skills Centre (CSC). Mdm Rusliawati Abd Rahman, Senior Nurse Officer of KON, provided an in-depth explanation on how the CSC is managed and operated to support the academic and practical training of nursing students. While some facilities were not accessible due to final preparations for the upcoming Final Professional Examination 2025, the delegates were briefed on the functions, layout, and strategic importance of the simulation centre in developing clinical competencies.

Hospital Visit at SASMEC @IIUM

Following the campus tour, the delegation proceeded to Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM) for a hospital visit. During the visit, the delegates toured various wards and clinical units, gaining insight into the hospital’s operations and healthcare services. The delegation had the opportunity to engage with SASMEC @IIUM staff and received a comprehensive overview of the hospital’s facilities, patient care systems, and support services. A special highlight of the visit was a stop at the Halimatussaadia Mother’s Milk Centre (HMMC), where delegates learned about IIUM’s initiatives in supporting neonatal care, breastfeeding advocacy, and maternal-child health, all developed in accordance with Shariah compliance. The visit also allowed the delegates to observe Kulliyyah of Nursing students undergoing their clinical attachments in different wards and outpatient clinics. This provided a valuable perspective on IIUM’s approach to integrating hands-on clinical experience with academic training in nursing education.

Academic Collaboration Roundtable

The academic exchange continued with the Academic Collaboration Roundtable, where researchers and academicians from both institutions engaged in dynamic discussions on potential joint academic programmes, collaborative research initiatives, and student and staff mobility opportunities. The session served as a meaningful platform to explore future pathways for strengthening bilateral academic cooperation and deepening institutional ties.

Closing Session & Reflections

Heartfelt closing remarks were shared by representatives of both institutions, where mutual appreciation was extended and the commitment to long-term collaboration reaffirmed. Both the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM, and the School of Nursing, Walailak University, expressed strong optimism for establishing sustainable partnerships in education, research, and professional training. KON is deeply honoured by the visit of our Thai counterparts. We are truly delighted by their presence and sincerely hope that this partnership will remain strong and enduring contributing meaningfully to the advancement of nursing education and practice at both regional and global levels.

Inbound Mobility Program from UIC, Philippines

The Kulliyyah of Nursing, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), proudly hosted students and staff from the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC), Philippines, as part of a successful Inbound Mobility Program from 14th to 17th April 2025. The four-day engagement showcased the richness of IIUM’s academic, clinical, and technological landscape while fostering intercultural understanding and professional collaboration. The program began with a warm welcome ceremony held at IIUM Kuantan campus, officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Kamil Che Hasan, Dean of the Kulliyyah of Nursing. The event included a jamuan makan (welcoming feast) and ice-breaking session, where both institutions exchanged warm introductions and set the tone for a meaningful academic journey.

On the second day, the UIC delegation toured the Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC @IIUM), led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lee Siew Pien and Dr. Nurasikin Mohamad Shariff. The group visited the Halimatussaadiah Mother’s Milk Centre (HMMC), the Shariah Department, and several wards, offering the guests a glimpse into IIUM’s holistic approach to Islamic-compliant healthcare services. The delegates joined the International Nursing and Midwifery Seminar on 16th April 2025, organized by the Department of Special Care Nursing. A notable moment was the presentation by Mr. Christian Joy Salas, Dean of UIC, on the topic “Mindfulness in Nursing”, which drew interest and admiration from fellow attendees. In the afternoon, the visitors explored the Clinical Skills Centre, guided by Senior Nurse Officer Mdm Rusilawati Abd Rahman, where they experienced firsthand IIUM’s state-of-the-art simulation training environment. Later, they were welcomed into the BioBehavioral Laboratory, where Dr. Shidqiyyah Abdul Hamid introduced current research tools and techniques focusing on psychophysiological health studies in nursing.

The final day included an insightful tour of the ODL (Open and Distance Learning) Studio, facilitated by Br. Muhammad Farhan. The UIC team learned about the studio’s history and development in supporting blended nursing education. A highlight of the day was the interactive podcast session, where students from both institutions exchanged views on nursing education and youth engagement in healthcare. The Inbound Mobility Program concluded on a high note with heartfelt farewells and a strengthened sense of solidarity between IIUM and UIC. This initiative not only promoted academic and clinical collaboration but also underscored the value of cultural respect and shared global health goals.

3 in 1 Visiting Professor Programme and Outbound Mobility to Malang, Indonesia

The Kulliyyah of Nursing, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), continues to advance its internationalisation mission through the successful implementation of the 3-in-1 Visiting Professor Programme in Malang, Indonesia. Held from 2nd to 9th May 2025, this flagship academic initiative was led by Dr. Haliza Hasan and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Mariam Muda. The programme was jointly hosted by Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM), Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), Universitas Brawijaya (UB), and Hospital Kanjuruhan, showcasing a holistic engagement that combined academic lectures, research collaboration, institutional partnerships, and community outreach.

Departure and Arrival: Setting the Stage for Regional Impact

On 2nd May 2025, both lecturers departed from Kuala Lumpur to begin their academic mission in Malang. This marked the beginning of a week-long engagement designed to foster regional collaboration, enrich nursing education, and address shared healthcare priorities between Malaysia and Indonesia.

Community Engagement at Puskesmas Bantur

The programme’s first major activity took place on 3rd May 2025, through a meaningful community engagement at Puskesmas Bantur, a local community health clinic. The session served as a platform for Dr. Haliza and Dr. Siti Mariam to share their knowledge and experiences in managing community mental health, maternity health, and healthcare services for individuals with special needs. Discussions with Indonesian health practitioners revealed common challenges and sparked mutual understanding, reinforcing the importance of cross-border collaboration in strengthening primary healthcare delivery and supporting vulnerable populations.


Cultural Exposure and Local Immersion

On the next day, the the delegates participated in a cultural visit organised by the host institutions. The excursion provided insights into local customs, traditions, and heritage, enriching the understanding of the social context in which Indonesian healthcare services operate. This cultural exchange highlighted the importance of respecting local values in delivering effective and empathetic care.

Guest Lectures at Universitas Brawijaya and Joint Publication Writing

The academic agenda advanced significantly on the 5th May 2025, when both KON academician delivered guest lectures at Universitas Brawijaya. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Mariam Muda presented on “The Essential Role of Nurses in Postpartum Care: Promoting Maternal Health and Well-being,” stressing the importance of nursing leadership in maternal care, particularly in the postnatal period. Dr. Haliza Hasan, in her lecture titled “The Essential Role of Nurses in Community Empowerment: Promoting Collective Health and Well-being,” explored the transformative role nurses play in advocating for public health at the grassroots level. These sessions were attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students and facilitated vibrant academic discourse. Later that day, the delegates also engaged in a joint academic writing session with faculty members from the host universities, initiating a collaborative manuscript for peer-reviewed publication that reflects shared expertise and research priorities.


Guest Lectures at Universitas Brawijaya and Hospital Collaboration

The academic exchange continued the next day with guest lectures at Universitas Brawijaya. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Mariam delivered a lecture titled “Advances in Lactation Management: Promoting Optimal Breastfeeding Practices in the Modern Era,” where she highlighted the latest evidence-based strategies in lactation support. Meanwhile, Dr. Haliza’s lecture, “Current Trends in Research on Special Needs: Fostering Planetary Well-being,” focused on inclusive healthcare research and its alignment with global sustainability goals. In the afternoon, the delegation visited Hospital Kanjuruhan to explore clinical collaboration opportunities. Discussions centred around student placement for the Master of Advanced Practice (MAP) programme, particularly in Emergency and Midwifery specialisations, and explored future joint initiatives in public health campaigns and research. The visit marked a promising step toward hospital-academic integration for workforce development and service improvement.

Establishment of MoUs with UMM and UM and Cultural Visit

On 7th May, the Kulliyyah of Nursing, IIUM formalised strategic academic partnerships through meetings to establish Memoranda of Understanding with Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang and Universitas Negeri Malang. These agreements will facilitate student and staff exchanges, collaborative research, academic training, and mobility programmes. The MoUs will reflect a shared commitment to elevating nursing education, research capacity, and cross-border institutional collaboration, particularly in the ASEAN region. The next day, for their last activity, the delegates had chance to join a cultural visit to Petik Apel offered the IIUM delegation an opportunity to experience rural life and community-based sustainability practices. The visit symbolised unity with nature and served as a meaningful cultural closure to the academic and institutional engagements of the past week.

Conclusion

The 3-in-1 Visiting Professor Programme has successfully demonstrated the potential of academic diplomacy in addressing regional health issues through knowledge-sharing, research partnerships, and community engagement. With five expert lectures delivered, a joint research publication underway, one rural community programme completed, and three institutional collaborations established, the programme has laid the groundwork for sustainable and impactful international cooperation. This initiative reflects the Kulliyyah of Nursing IIUM’s unwavering commitment to global health equity, academic excellence, and the advancement of nursing leadership in Southeast Asia.
