The Department inculcates the culture of excellence in developing a better future in Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation practices, through renowned education programmes based on Sejahtera Academic Framework; collaborating and delivering innovative researches; and providing value-based clinical services.
Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation was established in 1997 and is now based in IIUM Indera Mahkota Campus. The academic duties majorly involved teaching orthopaedic specialized posting to Year 4 & 5 undergraduate students and orthopaedic’s, master students.
The Department has started Master of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Semester 2008/2009. The first batch of this programme was enrolled by three students and has become the pioneer in clinical master program for Kulliyyah of Medicine.
One of the Department proudest achievement is the accreditation of its Research Laboratory; Orthopaedic Research Laboraotory (ORL). Based in Jalan Hospital Campus, It is the first research laboratory in IIUM and also the first laboratory of Orthopaedic research in Malaysia that has been accredited with MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The active involvement in research and the obtaining of MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the Orthopaedic research laboratory proves our commitment to fulfil the aspiration, vision and mission of the university.
ACADEMIC
Undergraduate Program
The department offers the MBBS 4210 course (Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation I) for the Year 4 students and MBBS 5602 (Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation II) for year 5 students as part of their specialized posting which will commence for 12 weeks and 6 weeks respectively. This programme will introduce an integrated approach to the disciplines of orthopaedics, traumatology and rehabilitation.
The purpose is not to teach orthopaedics as a speciality per se but rather to appreciate it as one facet in the spectrum of musculoskeletal disorders. During this posting, the students will gain the basic knowledge of orthopaedic problems, trauma, rehabilitation and related disorders.

Postgraduate Program
The Department of Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation, Kulliyyah of Medicine, IIUM has started Master of Orthopaedic Surgery in the year of 2008 and is the first clinical specialist training programme in Kulliyyah of Medicine. It is a four year program to train doctors to become Orthopaedic surgeon.
The students are thought basic science, principles of Surgery and Orthopaedics in year 1 and 2. Then, they will continue with subspecialties rotation till final professional exam. During this period the student will continue to work in the Department of Orthopaedic in SASMEC @IIUM. The minimum duration of study shall be four years. The maximum duration of study shall be seven years.

ACCREDITED LAB
MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (Testing Laboratory)
Orthopaedic Research Laboratory (ORL)
ORL was established in 2003 and officiated by Prof. Dato’ Dr. Syed Arabi Idid on 30th December 2008. It is a multidisciplinary research facility dedicated to basic and applied orthopaedics research, focusing on biomaterials. It has been accredited with the MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 which meets the “General Requirements of Competence of Testing & Calibration Laboratories” in the scope of Musculoskeletal Biocompatibility Test for Orthopaedic Medical Devices by Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SAMM).
It is the first research laboratory in IIUM and also the first laboratory of Orthopaedic research in Malaysia that has been accredited with MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017. The active involvement in research and the obtaining of MS ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the Orthopaedic research laboratory proves our commitment to fulfil the aspiration, vision and mission of the university.

The Orthopaedic Clinic at Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM) provides services related to the musculoskeletal system including trauma and non-trauma conditions which covers diagnostic, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention plans. The department caters to provide quality Orthopaedic care in these areas:
- Paediatric Orthopaedic
- Arthroplasty / Joint Reconstruction
- Spine Surgery
- Athroscopy and Sports Surgery
- Foot and Ankle Surgery
- Orthopaedic Oncology
- Advance Trauma & Limb Reconstruction
- Upper Limb and Microsurgery
- Sport Medicine
- Rehabilitation
The surgical services include inpatient, major surgery and day care surgery. We provide minor daycare surgery for conditions such as excision of ganglions, carpal tunnel surgery, trigger finger release, facet joint injection, intra-articular injections, excision of benign tumours, wound debridement and removal of implants.
The Orthopaedic in patient care consists of 25 bed male and female wards at level 6, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre @IIUM (SASMEC @IIUM). We strive to provide holistic medical care in tandem with our Shariah-compliant hospital policy.
